DAIRY Farming: Michael Healy Rae T. D., said: “Rural Ireland has depended on the family dairy farm system that built Ireland’s multi-billion euro dairy system with so much of the run-off income spilling into the local economies throughout Ireland.  “Dairy farmers, many of them carrying on a tradition and a family way of life, simply cannot take another body blow.

“Farmers always faced challenges face on and implemented and changed, but the constant blow after blow from this government and especially parts of it who seem to be very ‘anti farming,’ are putting people at a crossroads.”

SEASON OF CREATION 2023 – is marked throughout the Christian world from 1st September to 4th October (Feast of Saint Francis of Assisi) and celebrates the gift and beauty of God’s creation and encourages initiatives to protect our Common Home. This year’s theme “Let Justice and Peace Flow” is inspired by the Prophet Amos.  “Let justice roll on like a river, righteousness like a never-failing stream!” (Amos 5: 24). As Christians we are called to join the river of justice and peace, to take up climate and ecological justice and to speak out with and for communities most impacted by climate injustice and the loss of biodiversity. TINY HOUSE: David Westwood moved into a tiny home because traditional housing was too expensive. He says he and his partner were “working full-time and the weeks, months, years were just going by. All of our money was going on bills and we were, like so many others, stuck in the same monotonous cycle of work, work, work.”

The couple had been on the lookout for narrowboats and caravans when they found a company that builds tiny houses and “just kind of decided that’s what we wanted to do”.

HISTORY 1830 Samuel Lewis gives an extensive description of:  every Irish county, town and civil parish, churches (of all denominations) including the corresponding Catholic parish name (if different),

local industries, resources, and transport at that time, the principal estates, landowners, and gentry residing in the area, local history, geography, anecdotes, superstitions, and lifestyle of the people.

As it was published around the same time as the First Ordnance Survey of Ireland (aka “the 6 inch maps”) it is of particular value to those with place name clues that don’t seem to match up to modern-day maps:

The spellings of place names in these volumes are of that time and differ from spellings that are found in later documentation.

Where an Irish place name was spelled in various ways, a reference has been given from one to the other.

The “parish” to which Lewis refers is the civil parish (that matches the Church of Ireland parish).

As this was published in the 1830s (when Catholic Emancipation was rolling out) Lewis also indicates whether the Catholic parish was “co-extensive” (same name, same boundaries) or known by another name (and how many divisions or unions applied).

He differentiates local places of worship by “chapel” (Roman Catholic) and “church” (Protestant). Many rural RC chapels at that time were no more than thatched houses (donated by the local landlord).

The names of local courthouses, gaols and police stations of that time are also noted.
