IRISH ATHLETIC SPORTS.

Pilot, Volume 48, Number 2, 10 January 1885

A HEALTHY movement in Ireland has just received the approval of the two most popular Irishmen living, Dr. Croke, the patriot Archbishop of Cashel, and Charles Stewart Parnell, the National leader. It appears that a Gaelic Athletic Association has been established in Dublin for which the members asked those two famous men for their patronage. The Archbishop writes that he accedes to the request with the utmost pleasure.” And he adds that one of his most painful reflections is that Ireland is importing not only English goods but English games to the injury and discredit of her own. We advise all readers of The Pilot to the Archbishop’s excellent letter, and give it careful perusal. Mr. Parnell also expresses his pleasure at the movement and accepts the position of patron. There is suggestion and example in this for the greater Ireland in America. The noblest athletic games known are those practised by the Irish from time immemorial. They ought to be preserved for the good of the race. Manly games and sports are as necessary for boys and men as any other branch of education or pleasure.

ASKING TO BE SENT TO PRISON.

Pilot, Volume 48, Number 2, 10 January 1885

Judge McCafferty, of Boston, grow indignant last week when a poor starved boy pleaded guilty to a charge of vagrancy, in order to be sent to prison, where he would be fed and clothed and have a bed to sleep in. The lad said, and truly, that he had tried, day after day, to get work, but had failed. Judge McCafferty looked down at the little shivering figure, and his voice trembled as he spoke, “I am frequently called upon to deal with hard cases,” he said impressively, ‘‘but this is one of the saddest that I ever saw. There is something rotten in the charities of Boston or I would not have so many cases of this kind. Five or six men have come before me this week and pleaded guilty to a crime for the sake of a living. Strong, rugged men, capable of working and supporting others, plead guilty and are sent away among criminals for the sake of being clothed and fed. It is wrong and unjust. I protest against it in the name of humanity.’

Pilot, Volume 36, Number 11, 15 March 1873

Yet Muller, the letters show, took an emigrant to an office, and induced him to pay $ 45 for a ticket worth only $35. As there was no law to cover the case Mr. Muller was convicted of a misdemeanour only. At the same time a case was known where he made a serious mistake in change. In 1869, another case occurred where a poor man—a native of Ireland—arrived here with his wife and four children. He was innocent of the traps set for the emigrant, and arrived here with the intention of going to Chicago. One of his children took sick at Queenstown and was left in the hospital. On his arrival here he repaired to the house of Dennis McGrath, who warned him against the snares of Castle Garden, and advised him to remain in the place with his family until the passengers were ready to leave for the West. Mr. Wallach described the movements of an emigrant runner, who took this victim outside of the Garden, where McGrath saw him in the company of the runner, and succeeded in getting him (the emigrant) to accompany him to his house. He then told McGrath that the runner had taken him to Nicholas Muller’s office, where Muller told him he would have to take a first class ticket for the child who was to follow, and after paying this Muller had demanded a further deposit of $lO for incidental expenses of the child on .the way to Chicago. McGrath (Mr. Wallach said) explained the swindle to the emigrant, and took him to Superintendent Casserly to have his complaint taken. This was done, when Casserly sent for Muller, who admitted that he had charged full fare for a child eleven years old and returned the difference and the $lO advanced. Here Mr. Wallach remarked that he believed if a man was guilty of deceiving emigrants that man was not fit to take charge of the interests of emigrants.

Thos. Keneally, formerly attached to the Castle Garden, who will make affidavit to the fact when called upon. Muller had, he said, all his life long, lived upon the emigrants, and there was not a trick or device by which emigrants had been defrauded that was not known to Muller. Besides, he had a great influence in the ward politically,

===========================

The journalists in the mainstream press have never known what to do with this event. This is, after all, a positive gathering that brings together millions of people, mostly young Catholics. This is not an everyday thing. It shows young Catholics happy to embrace the church, while celebrating its teachings — a stark contrast to the secular world and the messages of hopelessness and sin we get each day.

As a result, the mainstream press covers World Youth Day and the pope’s appearances through a lens of scandal and (#ShockedShocked) politics.

Doctrine, as is often the case, is simply swept aside. Anything positive that can be gleaned from the gathering of so many young people is tossed aside. World Youth Day is a snapshot of the church’s future — but you wouldn’t know it from much of the coverage of the last week. For example, going to confession (with the pope helping out) is a major part of the World Youth Day experience. Valid story?

For great — and complete — World Youth Day coverage, the Catholic press did its job, once again. Places such as Crux, The Pillar on Substack and Catholic News Agency created pages where all their stories could be found. In other words, a one-stop-shop for all things World Youth Day.
