JOHN MC KENNA: The death has taken place of John (Jack ) Mc Kenna, Ardagh and formerly of Kildimo and Knocknagoshel on Tuesday August 1 at University Hospital Limerick. A memorial service to celebrate the life of Jack was held at St Molua’s Church Ardagh on Friday August 4 from 11.30am. The Requiem Mass was celebrated at 1pm, followed by a private Cremation. Sympathy to his wife Honor, children Jacqueline, John, Timmy, Ann, son-in-law, daughter-in-law, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and a wide circle of friends.  Jack was a stone mason, carver, and musician whose work can be seen around Ardagh village. May he rest in Peace.

GAELIC GAMES: St Kieran’s  defeated Croom by  2-15 to 0-14 in round one of the County Limerick Intermediate Hurling Championship played  at Coolyroe on Friday August 4. They led by 1-9 to 0-8 at half time TEAM Cillian Ambrose, Diarmuid Mulcahy, Johnny Mc Carthy, Aaron Heffernan, Anthony Mullins, Brendan Mc Carthy, Cathal Mc Enery, Jack Ben Harnett, Sean Ryan, Fionn Gleeson, Eoin Mc Enery, Mossie Shine,  Ian Mackessy, James Muckell, Mikey Long. Subs Anthony Molyneaux, Cormac Mann, James O’Connor, Michael Murphy, Donie Nolan.

St Kieran’s  were defeated  by Galtee  Gaels by 1-10 to 0-6 in the County Under 19 Football Championship  (14 a side)played at Knocklong on Tuesday August 1. They trailed by 1-7 to 0-3 at half time. TEAM Oisin Ryan, Bryan Sheahan, Darragh Mc Mahon, Sean Long, Conor Kelly, Mikey Kelly, Lorcan Murphy, Fionn Gleeson,  Cormac Murphy, Mikey Long, Derry O’Connor, Con Enright, Luke Corrigan.  John Doyle from the St Kieran’s club was a member of the Limerick masters football  team defeated by Cork  0-15 to 1-11 at Mitchelstown on Saturday July 29.

LADIES FOOTBALL: Limerick meet Down in the All-Ireland  Ladies Junior Football Championship Final on Sunday August 13 at 11.45am as part of a triple programme at Croke Park. The Old Mill club will be represented by four players on the Limerick panel. Good wishes are extended to Róisín Ambrose (Captain), Sophie Hennessy, Alva Quaid, Iris Kennelly and the Limerick squad in their quest to claim the honours. The match will be shown live on TG4.

SPLIT THE POT: Congratulations to John Gillard who won € 547 in the June, Creeves Celtic FC Split the Pot monthly draw held at the Thatch Newbridge on Wednesday August 2. Tickets to enter the draw are available from committee members, club managers, at Neary’s Ardagh,  Inver five crossroads Rathkeale and the  Thatch Newbridge. All support will be greatly appreciated.

LOTTERY DRAW: The Ardagh Development Association and Saint Kieran’s GAA joint weekly lottery   draw took place on Monday July 31. The numbers drawn were 4,15,19,20,and  there was  no  winner of the € 13,900 Jackpot. Congratulations  to the five lucky dip winners who received  € 40 each:  Denis Woods Ballyhahill, Paudie Kiely Glenville, Ardagh, Johanna Cussen Knockfinisk, Kate Ambrose Ardagh, Pat Lynch c/o Moore’s.  Next Monday night’s jackpot will  be € 14,000. People can play online using club force on the club’s Facebook page, with 6pm on Monday evening the deadline. The tickets are also on sale at the usual outlets, and all support will be appreciated.

RADIO DRAW: Congratulations to Lorraine Hynes, Dooradoyle Road Limerick, who won € 210, in the West Limerick 102fm 50/50 draw, held on Friday August 4.The tickets cost € 2, or 3 for € 5 and they are available from volunteers, in local shops, (including Moloneys Carrigkerry, and Denis Greaney’s Shop Ardagh) or from the radio station. FLEADH 23: Best wishes to all the dancers and musicians from the Ardagh/Carrigkerry Comhaltas branch who are taking  part in the All-Ireland Fleadh Cheoil in Mullingar from Sunday August 6, to Monday August 14. A number of people from the locality will be attending to soak up the atmosphere and enjoy the entertainment on offer. Viewers can watch the action on  TG4 for four consecutive nights from Thursday August 10 at 9.30pm.

HERITAGE WEEK: National Heritage week takes place from Saturday August 12 to Sunday August 20. A wide variety of events,  talks, walks, exhibitions, workshops, will take place around the county to mark and celebrate all things heritage around our communities. West Limerick community radio Exchange Programme presenter Shirley O’Regan will feature a number of heritage related stories on Mondays and Fridays from 11-1pm. Commencing on Monday 13, with a repeat airing that night.

BEACH EVENT: The Old Mill Ladies Football club are holding their annual gathering  of football and fun on Ballybunion beach on Saturday August  12, from 10.30am to 12 noon.

FUN DAY: Loughill Family Fun Day will be held on Saturday August 12 from 1pm in the Abha Bhán Parish Park. A lot of family fun events will be held  including tug-o-war, duck race, community games. A food and craft fair will be held in the Resource Centre. The entry fee is €5 per person or €10 per family.

CHARITY CÉILÍ: The second annual charity Céilí will be held in Knocknagoshel Community Centre V92WV70 on Sunday August 13 from 3pm. Music by Jerry Mc Carthy and proceeds in aid of the Carers Association. Admission € 10 and your support is appreciated.

SET CÉILÍ: A free set Céilí will be held in the Marquee in Feakle East Clare on Monday August 14 at 7pm. Music by Taylor’s Cross. On Saturday August 12 the Star  of Munster will play in the Community Hall at 9.30pm. On Sunday August 13 the Tulla Céilí Band will play in the marquee at 10pm. Admission for both these nights is € 10.

CEMETERY MASSES:  Mass will be celebrated  in Glin Church grounds on  Sunday  August 13 at 7.30pm. At Ballyine Mass Rock on Tuesday August 15 at 7.30pm. In Coolcappa  on Tuesday August 15 at 7.30pm. BARRIGONE PATTERN: Barrigone/Robertstown Community Group are holding a family fun day on Tuesday August 15, at 4pm following the 3pm Mass and rounds  at the Blessed Well Barrigone. The venue is at Hazelfield Barrigone V94 E5XC.  The list of events includes the final of the Voice of Barrigone with € 1,000 in prize money. Tractor, car and bike run, dog show, children’s treasure hunt and fancy dress, face painting, dunk tank, boys’ and girls’ football and soccer, target shoot , garden games etc. Live entertainment with Joe Sheahan and Sean Carrig and admission is € 10 for adults and children are free. RAMBLING HOUSE:  The next  rambling house will be held at Ballyhahill Hall on Wednesday August 16, at 8pm. All musicians, singers’ dancers and storytellers are most welcome to attend on the   night.

SEISIÚN NIGHTS: The very enjoyable Seisiún Shows are currently being held throughout Ireland during July and August.  Templeglantine  Comhaltas Branch will host the Limerick show at the Devon Inn Hotel on Thursday nights at 8.30pm. Visitors and locals can enjoy a great night’s entertainment and can participate if they wish in the proceedings in the second half of the show. Admission adults € 7, children €3 and all are welcome.  In Cork on Tuesday nights at 9pm at Bruach na Carriage Rockchapel, €5 and on Wednesday nights at 8pm at Freemount Heritage Centre, € 10 tea and treats.

MOUNT TRENCHARD: The Mount Trenchard house and gardens Foynes is open Monday to Friday during June, July and August from 9am to 1pm daily. Heritage week August 12-20, 9am to 5pm. Weekends by appointment. Fee adult € 8, pensioners/children/students € 4. It is a very interesting place to visit with its  storied past as a boarding school and association with the Spring Rice family.

GLENVILLE HOUSE: Glenville House and Gardens Ardagh will be open for  (Heritage Week) August 11-20, inclusive. Tuesday to Saturday from 9-30am to 1-30pm. Admission € 5, Students €3, children and old age pensioners are free.  The house is located a mile from Ardagh on the Kilcolman road and is well worth a visit.
