JOHN BARRETT: John (Jack ) Barrett, Glenastar, Ardagh, died peacefully at home on Sunday July 23, surrounded by his loving family. The Barrett family came from the Turaree area of Glin to live in Mc Mahon’s farm in Glenastar in 1971. Mick and Alice and family settled well and became involved in all the local activities. Jack was highly regarded around the locality for his workmanship and work ethic. He was a family man, friendly witty and quiet spoken. He could turn his hand to building, carpentry, plumbing, electric work etc. Cool calm and collected he was very good with his hands and around machinery. He combined running the family farm with his day job at Brouder’s Fitted Furniture Glin, who paid him a lovely tribute on Facebook. He was also on hand if neighbours and friends needed help to repair items. Yet to reach three score and ten years his passing has robbed his family of a husband and father, relative and the wider community a friend and a person they could call on when a need arose.

Reposing  was held at Riedy’s Funeral Home, Newcastle West on Tuesday July 25, from 6pm to 8 pm. The funeral cortege arrived at St Mary’s Church, Carrigkerry on Wednesday morning for Requiem Mass at 11.30am. Fr Michael Noonan concelebrated with Fr Tom Mangan. Family members participated in the ceremony with readings, prayers of the faithful, offertory and tributes. Symbols of importance to Jack’s life were taken to the Altar before mass commenced. They included a framed photo showing his love for family, a model silage tractor for his passion for  farming  work, a screwdriver associated with his carpentry work, a set of darts for his leisure activities and his rosary beads as he was a regular church attendee. The first reading was from the Book of Ecclesiastes and the second reading was the first letter of St John. They were very appropriate for the life that Jack lived.

Fr Michael paid his own tribute, daughter Alice and brother  Pat on behalf of the family before the final prayers. A large attendance was present at both the reposing, mass and burial to show the esteem that Jack was held in. Music and hymns were performed by Donie and Maura Nolan. Niamh Nolan and the Wren members paid tribute  to Jack at the graveside. He was laid to rest afterwards in Churchtown Cemetery Newcastle West as the heavy rain fell . Sympathy to  wife Nancy (nee Ahern), daughter Alice, sons Daniel and Mikey, brother Pat (Kildare), sisters Alice (Louth) and Gerardine (Moyvane), Alice’s partner Alan, Mikey’s partner Jodie, brothers in law, sisters in law, aunts, nephews, nieces, cousins and a wide circle of neighbours and friends.  Jack’s presence around the Glenastar road will be sadly missed by all and especially by  his family.
