HANNIE O’CONNOR: The death has taken place of Hannie O’Connor Nee Flynn Glensharrold, Carrigkerry. Hannie passed away peacefully in her 95th year on Saturday July 1, at her home surrounded by her loving family. Hannie is predeceased by her husband Seán and daughters Eileen and Margaret. A native of Glenastar, she attended Carrigkerry National School and received the sacraments in St Mary’s Church. She married Sean O’Connor in 1950 and they were blessed with 12 children and lived in the family farmhouse in Glensharrold. Hannie was a homemaker who worked hard to provide for her growing family over the years. Later they moved to a new house nearby which was immaculate in appearance from her guiding hand. It was a welcoming home for all visitors throughout and in recent years in retirement she was well cared for by family members. Reposing took place at St Molua’s Church, Ardagh on Sunday July 2, from 6pm to 8pm.The cortege arrived at St Molua’s Church, Ardagh on Monday July 3, for Requiem Mass at 11.30am. Fr Michael Noonan concelebrated with Canon Tony Mullins. Family members participated in the ceremony with readings, prayers of the faithful, offertory and reflection. Symbols of importance to Hannie’s life were taken to the Altar before mass commenced. They included her prayer book showing her deep faith as she attended mass regularly and in recent years welcomed Fr Michael to her home to receive Holy Communion. A card to show her interest in Bingo where she enjoyed successes in Telly Bingo and local Lottery. Her diary which contained all family milestones, and items to show her baking and love of gardening.
Fr Michael paid his own tribute and son Pa on behalf of the family before the final prayers. A large attendance was present at both the reposing, mass and burial to show the esteem that Hannie was held in. Music and hymns were performed by Donie Nolan, who also led the Wren members in a tribute at the graveside. Burial took place as the Sun shone afterwards in Templeathea Cemetery, Athea. Sympathy to her daughters Mary, Doreen, Hanorah, Bridie and Anne, sons Mike, Pa, Chris, John and Moss, brother Patie (Galway) and sister Madge (Essex), sons-in-law, daughters-in-law, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great great-grandchild, nephews, nieces, relatives, neighbours and friends. Hannie’s presence at Casey’s bend in Glensharrold will be sadly missed by all and especially by her family. She enjoyed a long life well lived surrounded by a loving family and may she rest in Peace.
MICHAEL GUINEY: The death has taken place of Michael Guiney, Castlequarter, Ballyhahill, surrounded by his loving family on Saturday July 1, in Killeline Nursing Home, Newcastle West. He was a hardworking member of the farming community. Predeceased by his wife Maisie Guiney (née Hennessy). Reposing at St Colman’s Church, Kilcolman, on Tuesday July 4,from 6pm, to 8pm. The Funeral Mass was celebrated on Wednesday at 12 noon, followed by burial in Calvary Cemetery in NCW. Co. Limerick. Sympathy to his children, Tom, Robert, and Rose and his seven grandchildren, his son-in-law David, daughters-in-law Regina and Aoife and his sisters Margaret, Sheila, and Anne, brothers Fr. John SJ, Eddie, his nieces and nephews, his extended family, kind neighbours and friends. May he rest in Peace.
FARMING AWARD: Congratulations to John O’Connor Ballykennedy, Ballingarry on receiving the National Irish Pure Friesian Herd of Year award for 2023. John is son of Michael Carrigkerry and Breda Athea and with brother Mike run a very successful enterprise.

GAELIC GAMES: St Kieran’s were defeated by Newcastle West by 0-12 to 1-6 in Group 1 Round 2 of the County Senior Football Championship at Askeaton Gaelic Grounds on Friday July 7. The strong wind made it a difficult evening for the players with the county champions adopting better and spreading their scoring over the two halves. They led by 0-7 to just one point converted by Dylan Moloney for St Kieran’s at half time. They were double scores ahead 0-10 to 0-5 entering the final 10 minutes. An Alan Daly cracker of a goal made the closing stages exciting, but Newcastle West held out for the victory. Both teams were missing players for various reasons. The championship will take a break now until August. LADIES FOOTBALL: Limerick defeated Sligo by 2-7 to 1-7 in the All-Ireland Junior Football Championship group match at Newcastle West Gaelic Grounds. The Old Mill club were represented by Roisín Ambrose Captain, Alva Quaid, Iris Kennelly, and Sophie Hennessy. The win saw them progress to the semi final.
COMMUNITY GAMES: Congratulations to the Saint Kieran’s community games members who enjoyed a very successful County final over Saturday/Sunday June 24/25. They enjoyed success in the many track and field events, and members will represent Limerick in the National finals in August.
SOCCER NEWS: Kilcolman Rovers lost 3-2 to Breska Rovers in the Women’s Munster Junior Shield semi-final at Mick Hanley Park on Sunday July 2. Mia Forrestal and Aisling Kelly scored their goals. This ended their season which was a very successful one after winning the League and League Cup.
ROUNDERS: Congratulations to St Kieran’s junior ladies’ rounder’s team who defeated Castletown Liam Mellows 9-4 at Emo County Laois in their first match this season. LOTTERY DRAW: The Ardagh Development Association and Saint Kieran’s GAA joint weekly lottery draw took place on Monday July 3. The numbers drawn were 12,14,19,23,and there was no winner of the € 13,500 Jackpot. Congratulations to the five lucky dip winners who received € 40 each: Catherine Keane Moyvane c/o Moloney’s, T.D. SEISIÚN NIGHTS: The very enjoyable Seisiún Shows will be held throughout Ireland during July and August. Templeglantine Comhaltas Branch will host the Limerick two-hour show at the Devon Inn Hotel on Thursday nights commencing on July 13 at 8.30pm. Visitors and locals can enjoy a great night’s entertainment and can participate if they wish in the proceedings.
MUNSTER FLEADH: The Munster Fleadh Cheoil will be held in Tralee from Thursday July 13, to Sunday July 16. An action-packed programme is in place for all music lovers to enjoy. Best wishes to all the local competitors who are participating in competitions.
SUPPORT DAY: Creeves Celtic are holding a World Cup support day for all their underage girls’ teams along with their junior ladies’ team to show their support for the upcoming women’s World Cup. On the day they will be plenty of fun games, penalty shootouts, crossbar challenge and lots of other fun activities planned. All their existing players from Under 8 to Under 14 girls and any new players wanting to try out soccer are welcome on the day.
