ABBEYFEALE TOURIST OFFICE: Opened on Thursday last on a trial basis for 2023 at the Work Hub building on Main St. (the old Provincial Bank). Almost twenty Volunteers have kindly offered a few hours a week to cover the hours of 10am-1pm for the months of June, July and Aug. The Tourist Office will be located at the Workbase E-Hub on Main Street, following collaboration between the Management of the Building and Abbeyfeale Community Council. GLORACH NEWS: On Thursday, June 8th we have a night of bluegrass music with the critically acclaimed musicians Melody Walker and Jacob Groopman fitting in the Glórach as part of their tour itinerary. Two nights later we stay local with The Lost Souls returning to the stage on Saturday, June 10th, with the night being a fundraiser for St. Ita’s Hall which will be undergoing extensive renovations. DOLLY DAY SATURDAY JUNE 24 AT 4PM LISTOWEL: The O’Connor family are continuing to fund raise for Kerry Hospice and Comfort for Chemo. This time the late Jim’s sister Cora is organising a Dolly Day in honour of Dolly Parton when an attempt will be made to establish a Guinness World Record for the most people dressed head to toe as Dolly Parton. Each entrant must be instantly recognisable as Dolly Parton and will have to wear an outfit that Dolly has been photographed in ie blue jeans, boots, guitar – the big chest is mandatory ( if you’re a grapefruit type of gal the organisers suggest balloons!) as well as the blond wig. You can register online on eventbrite / dolly day. It should be a bit of craic so why not gather up all your friends and make a night out of it in Listowel. The count for the Guinness book of Records takes place at 6.30pm. Check out their FB page for details re outfits, entertainment, where to collect your wig which comes with the ticket purchase etc.
BIRTHDAY CONGRATULATIONS: to Maureen Sweeney nee Flavin who celebrated her 100th Birthday on Sunday 4th June in Knockanure. Maureen’s’ weather report was instrumental in the D day operation.
IRISH SIGN LANGUAGE COURSES: Certified and non certified Irish Sign Language courses will begin in September 2023 at the College of further education, Mountmahon. Students will be introduced to the Irish Sign Language Dictionary, use common phrases to communicate non verbally, develop vocabulary and language skills and much more. FAIR: The second Ballylongford Fair will be held over the weekend of 24-25 June where Irish traditional trades and craftspeople will talk about and demonstrate their work.
