OUT AND ABOUT
What a beautiful evening this Monday as I begin to put my few bits of news together. You would know the Summer is approaching as one can notice extra traffic on the roads. The silage is starting and the tractors and cutting equipment is getting Bigger and more Modern and Sophisticated as the years go by. Many people have their turf cut and sliced, and its funny the way we are just over the Winter and Spring and once again we are preparing for the Winter, the Season’s just seem to roll so quickly into each other, the farmers organising their fodder for their cattle and families sorting their fuel for colder days ahead.
On Saturday week next, May 28th, the Sacristans collection will be taken up at the evening Mass. I’m sure everyone is aware of the tremendous work both Siobhán and Teresa do, both around the church, the Altar, behind the scenes, the book work, organising Anniversary Masses, keeping accounts and a whole lot more. I’m sure everyone’s appreciation would mean a lot to both of them.
A great crowd of Cyclists gathered at the Hall on Sunday morning last for the P.J. O’Riordan Memorial Road Race. PJ was an active member of Newcastle West C.C. until he passed away from cancer in 2020. Athea has a great history of cyclists over the years ,including Teddy Mulvihill, Billy Reidy and now Paul Collins has been added to the squad. It was lovely to watch all the different colours of jerseys from the various clubs who took part on Sunday doing the 27k circuit. Well done to them all.
It was an exciting evening last Thursday in Mallow as the Limerick Minors took on Tipperary, in the Electric Ireland Munster Minor Football Championship, Phase 1. Tipp had beaten Limerick in recent weeks and this was an all important game for them to win. It was Nail-Biting towards the end but thankfully we came out victorious by 3 points at the whistle, much to the excitement of the Athea and Limerick supporters, not to mention the players. There were scenes of Joy as they received the Cup and they now progress to meet KERRY on Thursday evening which should be fun. 1956 was the last time Limerick Minors won Silverware. At the time of writing I don’t have the venue for the game but it may be Newcastlewest, so give them your support.
THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK:-
A KIND WORD IS LIKE A SPRING DAY.
