Down syndrome

Jacinta Hamilton Blogs- March 21, 2023

March 21 marks the observance of World Down Syndrome Day — a celebration of the countless individuals who bless our world with this condition. But the fight to recognize the value of all life continues, and the statistics are staggering. In Ireland, 95% of babies with Down syndrome are reportedly aborted. Iceland claims to have “eliminated” Down syndrome by killing 100% of babies with Down syndrome by abortion. In the U.S., approximately 74% of expectant parents abort a child with Down syndrome.

IRISH Abroad; This week, Brian Mitchell, an expert in Northern Ireland emigration, looks at the settlement of Ulster Scotts in Philadelphia. People of Irish descent are still among one of the largest ethnic groups there having lived in the city since 1717. Beginning with an exploration of the importance of the linen trade in their emigration stories, he also explores how the Irish shaped the city from the formation of the ‘Loyal Sons of St. Patrick’ and their vital role in the American War of Independence to the mass emigration that ensued in the years following the Great Irish Famine.

WATER: Last week, the Biden administration announced sweeping new rules aimed at curbing the amount of these chemicals in the nation’s water supply. Years in the making, the changes would establish federal limits on manufactured compounds known as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), or “forever chemicals,” that don’t degrade naturally and can build up over time in the air, soil, and water, producing dangerous health effects. If implemented as proposed, the rules would represent the most significant change to water quality regulations in decades—but complying with them won’t be cheap. ——————————

Conclusions

In the general U.S. population in 2003–2004, PFOS, PFOA, PFHxS, and PFNA serum concentrations were measurable in each demographic population group studied. Geometric mean concentrations of PFOS, PFOA, and PFHxS in 2003–2004 were lower than in 1999–2000. The apparent reductions in concentrations of PFOS, PFOA, and PFHxS most likely are related to discontinuation in 2002 of industrial production by electrochemical fluorination of PFOS and related perfluorooctanesulfonyl fluoride compounds.

Strong Kerry flavour at Fleadh Nua

THERE was a very strong Kerry flavour at the Fleadh Nua held in Dublin at the week-end by Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann and due to be repeated next year. Somebody suggested that the week-end was dominated by Kerry personalities and to a certain extent this was true. The first big moment of the Fleadh came on Saturday, when at mid-day, the much publicised pony and gig from Tralee, piloted by Liam Tarrant with co-pilot Johnny Dore arrived in Croke Park. Rehearsals were immediately suspended as the crowd surrounded the Kerrymen  and heard of their epic journey, which commenced in Tralee on Wednesday morning. But Liam and Johnny were by no means the first of the big Kerry contingent to arrive. At 10.30 on Saturday morning the gaily bedecked ‘Biddy Boys’ from Kilgobnet – arrived, having left home at 3 a.m. Kerry artistes were well to the fore on Saturday night at the celebrity concert These included Maire Ni Dhaoda Abbeydorney (singer) and Kerry champions Ballyheigue Comhaltas Polka Group. The big event of the week-end was, however, the mammoth pageant at Croke Park on the Sunday. Credit for the success of this event must go to the producer, Moyvane born Rev. Pat Ahen, of the Communications Centre. General feeling was that nobody but Father Ahern could streamline with just two rehearsals, a programme which had in all over 500 artistes from Ireland and England. Perched high up in the Hogan Stand, Father Ahern conducted the show, which will be talked about by the 8,000 people who attended, for many years to come.

Among the many from Kerry who took part in the show were the Ballyheigue Polka Group, the Kilgobnet Biddy Boys. Maire Ni Dhaoda, Denis Murphy, Julia Clifford and B. Clifford of Gneeveguilla. A fitting climax to the programme was the entry of the four Kerry dancers—Liam Tarrant. Tralee; Jerry Nolan, Moyvane; Michael O’CarrolI, Ballyduff,  and Jack Lyons, Ballybunion.

The pony and gig. It was like the entry of the gladiators! Piloting the gig on this occasion was Johnny Dore and Beale-born Tim Foley, on holidays from Birmingham. Following the pageant, impromptu sessions under the Hogan Stand and in the precincts of the Park kept the crowd entertained. The All-Ireland final of the Scoraiocht competition filled the Olympia Theatre on Sunday night, with honours going to the star-studded Ballinasloe group.

The Leinster Provincial Fleadh Cheoil on Monday attracted almost 600 entries. Even here, Kerry people were in the news, for one of the two Ceili Bands which qualified for Fleadh Cheoil na h-Eireann in Listowel, The Green Linnets, was led by John McNamara whose father is a native of Toor, Duagh. As Kerry artistes contributed so much to the success of the Fleadh Nua. It was fitting that the last entertainment act should come from two Kerrymen. At the close of the Ceili Band Competition, the chairman of the Leinster Council. Mrs. Catherine Mullaly. Mullingar thanked everybody for their support, and said she had been inundated with requests for the Kerry dancers to perform. Out stepped the redoubtable Liam Tarrant and Jerry Nolan to dance their now famous reel, and the applause which greeted their performance, rocked the Colaiste Mhuire Hall.
