The younger Coulter recalls this piano, made by Challen, as ‘the most important piece of furniture in the house’. ‘I always stayed away from the fiddle, having inflicted enough pain on my family with the piano,’ he laughed. FEAST: Feast of St. David is celebrated on Wed. 1st March.  Patron Saint of Wales, several Irish saints were pupils at his monastery.  The daffodil is the national symbol of Wales.

WHEN IRELAND’S CAUSE WAS SOLD FOR A BATTLE OF WHISKY.

The Sacred Heart Review, Number 12, 13 March 1909 (Temperance.)

We are all more or less familiar with the part played by the unfortunate love of liquor in the Irish rebellion of 1798. The tale has often been told, (although no lasting lesson has been learned from it,) of advantages won by valour and lost by liquor in that struggle of Wexford’s peasantry against the disciplined might of England. But an earlier example of the unholy and traitorous part played by liquor in Irish history is, perhaps, not so well known. In view of the coming feast of St. Patrick, it may be well to recall it. In 1601 when a Spanish force, sent over to help Ireland win back her ancient independence, was occupying the town of Kinsale it was besieged by the English. But the English were in turn surrounded by an Irish army under O’Neil and O’Donnell, and thus were placed between two fires. It was decided that a general attack should be made on the English by the forces of O’Neil and O’Donnell on the one hand, and the Spaniards on the other. This attack might or might not have succeeded, according as the English, whom it was hoped to take by surprise, fought well or ill, but, anyway, there was treason in the ranks of the Irish, the English were apprised of the proposed attack , and the Irish and Spanish forces were disastrously defeated. This is how it came about: A certain Brian MacMahon whose son, it seems, had been, some years before, a page to Sir George Carew in England, ” for old time’s sake ” sent a message to Carew asking for a bottle of whisky. The whisky was sent, and so grateful was MacMahon for the gift that he informed Carew of the intended attack. “The list of Irish traitors is a long one,” says the Rev. E. A. D’Alton in his history of Ireland, “but our history records no more infamous transaction than this bartering of faith and country for a bottle of whisky.” The Irishmen who drink to excess on St. Patrick’s Day are guilty of a crime against their birth land and their religion which differs only in degree from that of Brian MacMahon. Drunkenness on St. Patrick’s Day is a species of treason to the old land and the old faith which every loyal Irishmen should reprobate and condemn.

IRISH going abroad.

This week, Northern Irelands’ leading Genealogist Brian Mitchell takes us through the journey of some 9 million Irish Diaspora, now living in Great Britain, USA, Canada, New Zealand and South Africa who eimigrated via Derry. The city remained a major Irish emigration port through all significant phases of emigration from Ireland, from the 18th century outflow of Scots-Irish to colonial America, to pre-Famine, Famine and post-Famine emigration to North America.

RECYCLE; I spend a lot of time – too much time – thinking about recycling and the main thing I think, over and over, is: it shouldn’t be this hard. Eighty per cent of UK households are “still unclear” about how to recycle effectively, according to research last year – and who can blame us?

Labelling often requires a doctorate in semiotics to decode, kerbside collections are a postcode lottery and council recycling centres are often difficult to access without a car. At home, packaging piles up – no one knows what to do with toothbrushes or the cat’s treat packages, and we’re squabbling over pizza boxes. All of it amounts to us collectively wondering whether recycling is ultimately pointless because it’s all going to end up in landfill in the developing world.

CLIMATE: Cold, arid conditions during the first half of the last ice age (110,000 to 60,000 years ago) were punctuated every 20,000 years by warm summers in the Northern Hemisphere. These climate shifts, triggered by the wobble of Earth’s axis, created green corridors between Africa and Eurasia that set the stage for migratory waves of Homo sapiens. With the growth of lush grasses and shrubs, the expansion of animals and early humans out of Africa became possible. “If you imagine savannah biomes, they’re perfect for herbivores such as cattle, oryx, and other four-hooved animals,” explains Petraglia. “They migrate in those situations and eat off the grasslands, and then of course you have standing fresh water and aquatic resources in freshwater lakes.”

In contrast, periods of low temperatures and extreme drought would have made human travel far less likely. Paleoclimatic models are in wide agreement that 60,000 to 70,000 years ago—an era that is often thought to be the main timeframe for modern human dispersal out of Africa—was one of the most extended drought periods in northern Africa, Saudi Arabia, and the eastern Mediterranean in the last 125,000 years, says Timmermann. “Walking into the Arabian Peninsula around 60,000 to 70,000 years ago,” he remarks, “would have been a bad choice.”

Early human migration – The oryx is one of the many mammal species that may have led early modern humans out of—and in some cases back into—Africa during migrations over the last 100,000 years.

WASTE: According to Isaias Hernandez, zero-waste grocery shopping, just like sustainability in general, is a spectrum.  “Don’t focus on perfectionism,” he says, especially if doing so has a negative impact on your physical or mental health.  He suggests starting with a question: How can I reduce waste by 10 percent? Look at your cart, take stock of how much plastic and waste is there, and make one swap at a time as it’s feasible and practical. You’ll be reducing the amount of waste you create in no time.
