A sacred text for journalists is the Associated Press stylebook. AP style governs everything from grammar and punctuation to what words to capitalize and which numbers to spell out.

The stylebook is the definitive resource, as important as a press pass to reporters and an indispensable tool to copy editors. I was a newspaper reporter and editor for 30 years, and I always had two copies of the latest stylebook, one in the office and one at home. I could quote it verbatim.

HEALTH: Doctors and nurses leveled some harsh criticisms at the government for mismanaging the healthcare system in a recent survey.

Research conducted by Blu Ivy Group asked 359 healthcare professionals for their opinions about the state of the field in Canada.

One physician said that Canada’s healthcare troubles were happening well before the Covid-19 pandemic.

“It’s not the pandemic. This has been a long time coming — underfunding, burnout, poor efforts at retention, horrible working conditions and regulations, boomers retiring and getting sick.  Malignant governmental and societal neglect of healthcare,” said one doctor.

Larry Chapp Commentaries

January 4, 2023

Short reflections on the “legacy” of a great and influential person after his passing are always in danger of oversimplification. After all, a person does not reach the stature of a Joseph Ratzinger/Pope Benedict XVI by being simplistic, uncomplicated and unnuanced.

Sadly, while he was still alive, and during most of his career, there was no shortage of those who sought to pigeonhole him as either an “archconservative” and rigidly doctrinaire “Panzer Cardinal” or, conversely, as a dangerous “modernist liberal.”

I think most of these caricatures are just so much fiddle-faddle. I say “most of these” because one thing these caricatures get right is their instinctive insight that what most characterized Joseph Ratzinger, and thus where we should look in assessing his legacy, is that he was first and foremost a theologian. Twice he turned down the request of Pope St. John Paul II to become head of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, and he only relented when the sainted Pope stopped requesting and began demanding.

  1. CASEY: The Sacred Heart Review, Volume 45, Number 5, 21 January 1911

From all parts of Limerick and many parts of Kerry an immense crowd forgathered at Abbeyfeale, recently, to take part in the ceremony of unveiling a statue in memory of the late Rev. William

Casey, who was pastor of Abbeyfeale for a long number of years prior to his death. At the exercises

of unveiling, one of the speakers called attention to Father Casey’s work in fighting the evil of drink.

The speaker said: —He had to face the two demons that had kept their people down. He had to face the two demons whose course of sovereignty was traced in streams of blood and in abysses of destruction for their race—the demon of landlordism and the still greater and more destructive demon of alcohol. Father Casey set himself to fight these two demons and he conquered them as much as a man could hope to conquer them in his lifetime.

TURF: At a meeting in Listowel, Tuesday evening, a Turf Co-operative Society was established for North Kerry. Representatives of the surrounding turf producing centres attended.

Mr. N. O’Brien said that this country had been sending out £3,000,000 or £4,000,000 each year for coal from England and Scotland, keeping thousands of British miners employed, and enabling mine owners to pay huge dividends, while thousands of men and boys were idle here, and hundreds of acres of good bog were available.

People might be inclined to say 11/6 a ten was a small price, but turf producers in Kerry especially around Killorglin and Caragh Lake had found that it gave 2 / – more profit per ton than previously.

Because of the cost of transport, handling and distribution, t h e price could not be increased, but there was a guaranteed market and price for all turf produced.

The Government had set aside money for bog development and it was only where co-operative societies existed that it would be expended.

It had been decided that the Listowel Society would develop the bogs of Listowel, Newtown, Tarbert and Ballylongford, but since t h e n an application had been received for a society in Newtown and a meeting would be held in t h a t district during the Week. About 1,500 acres of bog were available in the district.

A provisional committee was set up as follows: J. Cain, M. Mullally, T. Brandon, P. Keane, Listowel; E.

O’Brien, Blanemore, Listowel; D. Flavin, Listowel; E. J. Walsh, Tullamone. J. McAullffe, Listowel, secretary. It was stated t h a t the secretary had already received an order for 1,000 tons of turf.

The death on Thursday last of Mrs. Anne Lyons, relict of the late Jerh. Lyons, Duagh, removes one of the best known figures to the life of North Kerry. Mrs. Lyons was the mother of Capt. Jerry Lyons, Duagh Company, I. R. A., brutally murdered at Gortglanna in May, 1921, and her demise recalls poignant memories of that incident. Her other son, Rev. Jas. Lyons, is attached to the American Mission, being at present in Newburgh, N. Y. She was sister of Rev. Jas. Corridan, Pastor of St. John Chrysostom’s Church, Bronx, New York, and of Thomas and Patrick Corridan, merchants, Listowel. Many farmers In the Athea district are seriously contemplating giving up the raising of bacon pigs

The Night of the Big Wind (Irish: Oíche na Gaoithe Móire) was a powerful European windstorm that swept across what was then the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, beginning on the afternoon of 6 January 1839, causing severe damage to property and several hundred deaths. 20 to 25% of houses in north Dublin were damaged or destroyed, and 42 ships were wrecked.[1] The storm attained a very low barometric pressure of 918 hPa (27.1 inHg) and tracked eastwards to the north of Ireland, with gusts of over 100 knots (185 km/h; 115 mph) before moving across the north of England to continental Europe, where it eventually dissipated. At the time, it was the worst storm to hit Ireland for 300 years.[2][3] Liverpool also suffered severely, with many shipwrecks and much structural damage. 120 people died as a result of such accidents in the city alone. Two major shipwrecks resulted in damage of at least £500,000, equivalent to £52.2 million in 2020.[4]

WE NOW ARE LOOKING FOR YOUR LOCAL STORIES

Did you know that in the 1930s thousands of stories were collected from school children throughout Ireland by the Irish Folklore Commission?

For the duration of the project, more than 50,000 schoolchildren from 5,000 schools in the 26 counties of Ireland were enlisted to collect folklore in their home districts. This included oral history, topographical information, folktales and legends, riddles and proverbs, games and pastimes, trades and crafts. The children recorded this material from their parents, grandparents, and neighbours.

VATICAN CITY — Pope Benedict XVI, whose entire theological project was singular focused on the person of Christ, once described Jesus as the one “in whom God’s love descends upon human beings.”

The weather at the scholarly Pope’s funeral today provided a poetic illustration of this truth — a gentle fog enshrouded St. Peter’s Basilica as the Church universal commended Benedict to the love and mercy of God.

“The holy cloud, the shekinah, is the sign of the presence of God himself. The cloud hovering over the Tent of Meeting indicated that God was present,” the late Pope had written in Volume One of his Jesus of Nazareth trilogy.
