Billy was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer in October 2021 and whilst he faced this disease with tremendous courage and strength, he passed away on February 17th 2022. He spent a time within the Palliative Care Unit in UHK where the care, support and treatment were out of this world. He received the best care from the best team. BEAUTY: According to the latest reports from Zero Waste Week, beauty packaging amounts to 120 billion units every year. That includes plastic, paper, glass, and metals, all of which end up in landfills year after year. Recycling is not always straightforward with cosmetic packaging because brands make most boxes, bags, and containers with mixed materials. Even when the components are separable, it is usually a waste of time for recycling workers.

IRISH in England: Ultan Cowley is a historian, former emigrant, and author of ‘The Men Who Built Britain: A History of the Irish Navvy’ (2001), the standard work on the history of Irish male migrant labour in British construction.

The Cowley Collection, Ultan’s unique archive of personal correspondence, photographs, and recorded conversations associated with that vanished world has recently been acquired by the London Irish Centre for Conservation in London Metropolitan University’s Archive of the Irish in Britain.

The middle of the last century was the golden age of the Irish Navvy. All over Britain hydro dams, power stations, refineries and motorways were being built by major British contractors like Taylor Woodrow, Tarmac, Wimpey, and McAlpine. To these big civil engineering firms, the nomadic Irish navvies were the indispensable shock troops of post-war reconstruction.

The navvies lived in large camps, in remote locations, with ample overtime and little opportunity to spend their wages. These ‘long distance men’ followed the Big Money from one end of Britain to the other. Their lives were legendary.

Mr. Blennerhassett has followed the good example set by Mr. Mitchell Henry and Mr. Butt. On Wednesday, he addressed his North Kerry constituents. In the village of Ballydonoghue. The chair was occupied by the Rev. George Fitzmaurice, Protestant Rector of the Parish, and by his

Side were the Rev. Michael O’Sullivan, P. P.,and the Rev. John O’Connor, C. C., in fact well worthy of notice, as clearly setting forth the harmonious manner In which the Rector and the Priest are working In the cause of Home Rule. Mr. Blennerhassett fully endorsed the opinions expressed

by him at the late conference, and alluded with great force and ability to the disgraceful condition of the Grand Jury laws. He criticised unfavourably the Education Bill, which did not give substantial equality to the education of young Catholic. He spoke in favour of the principles of the

Home Rule  League, and urged his hearers to Join the Club associations ; and expressed his confidence in the final triumph of the Home Rule movement. A unanimous vote of confidence will pasted in Mr. Blennerhassett. He is a true Irishman—and it would be well for us we had plenty of

The 1918 General Election was significant in many ways. Not only was it the first election in which women could stand, it was also the first time that women over 30 who met a property qualification could vote. Interestingly, the press labelled 1918 as the ‘women’s election’.

Constance Markievicz was selected as a Sinn Féin candidate for Dublin St Patrick’s. Markievicz was in Holloway prison during the election for her involvement in anti-conscription activities during the First World War, and she had previously been imprisoned for her involvement in the Easter Rising in 1916. Indeed, the only reason she was not executed for treason was because she was a woman.

The National Archives holds a large amount of material on Markievicz and her election campaign in the Home Office and Colonial Office records. These records provide a unique insight into Markievicz’s election campaign, both in terms of the logistics of how it was run and the causes that she championed.
