Billy was a heavy metal rocker fanatic all his life. Always bestowing his love of rock (heavy rock) to both family and friends. Billy was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer in October 2021 and whilst he faced this disease with tremendous courage and strength, he passed away on February 17th 2022. He spent a time within the Palliative Care Unit in UHK where the care, support and treatment were out of this world. He received the best care from the best team. His family will be forever grateful to this incredible team for what they did for Billy. This event is a fitting tribute to Billy and supports an amazing cause. Unfortunately so many have been touched by this awful disease and this facility in Tralee, like so many more around the country, has offered patients superior patient care always. All proceeds from this rock night go towards the Palliative Unit, UHK. We appreciate your support!

ST PIO: On Tuesday night 17 Jan 2023 in Castleisland a crowd from many parts of the county and well beyond, gathered in the Church of Saints Stephen and John to witness Padre Pio devotee and PP Fr. LOCAL BORN: Munster Bovine’s Doreen Corridan outlined what will be required from the cow of the future in Ireland. She noted that cows will have to become more resource efficient and sustainable. She added that dairy cows will have to be capable of generating calves that can be integrated into the beef industry. Commenting on the dairy herd’s Economic Breeding Index (EBI), she said that the top 20% of dairy cows in EBI should be used to produce the replacement heifers for the dairy herd and warned against using beef bulls on these. She noted that farmers with cows in the bottom 20% of EBI should consider buying their replacement dairy heifers from the herds in the top 20%.

FUNDS: Open to GAA, LGFA, and Camogie clubs in the Republic of Ireland, the €800,000 funding is designed to make existing walking tracks more accessible to persons with mobility issues, such as older persons and wheelchair users. Funding may also cover the upgrading or installation of lighting designed to prolong the hours of usage particularly during the dark winter evenings.

WIND farms provided 34% of Ireland’s electricity requirements in 2022. Wind farms could supply more power, if people were notified when they are producing a surplus.
Farmers are expected to be able to sell their solar power to the national grid under the Clean Energy Guarantee. Upgrade required to the lines to supply this power to the grid, would be the responsibility of the farmer, according to media reports.

TRAINS: Neven Maguire’s Greenway Food Trails programme on RTE January 18 at 8.30pm, was about the Limerick to Tralee railway. Saturday February 4, 2023 is the 60th anniversary of the last regular passenger train on the route. Kilmorna, Devon Road, Barnagh and Ardagh closed permanently on the day. Freight and occasional passenger trains continued to use Abbeyfeale, Newcastle West, and Rathkeale, until closed in 1975 and finally Listowel closed in 1977.

HOLOCAUST Memorial Day on 27 January is the day to remember the millions of people murdered in the Holocaust, under Nazi Persecution and in the genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia, and Darfur. 2.3 million People, according to the museum’s data, visit the Auschwitz-Birkenau museum per year. IRISH in England: Ultan Cowley is a historian, former emigrant, and author of ‘The Men Who Built Britain: A History of the Irish Navvy’ (2001), the standard work on the history of Irish male migrant labour in British construction.
The Cowley Collection, Ultan’s unique archive of personal correspondence, photographs, and recorded conversations associated with that vanished world has recently been acquired by the London Irish Centre for Conservation in London Metropolitan University’s Archive of the Irish in Britain.
The middle of the last century was the golden age of the Irish Navvy. All over Britain hydro dams, power stations, refineries and motorways were being built by major British contractors like Taylor Woodrow, Tarmac, Wimpey, and McAlpine. To these big civil engineering firms, the nomadic Irish navvies were the indispensable shock troops of post-war reconstruction.
The navvies lived in large camps, in remote locations, with ample overtime and little opportunity to spend their wages. These ‘long distance men’ followed the Big Money from one end of Britain to the other. Their lives were legendary.

Tralee, Friday Evening. LISTOWEL PETTY SESSIONS.—At the last Listowel Petty Sessions, a man named Healy, a pensioner from the army, was charged with drunkenness on the 24th
ult. The defendant pleaded that he took the drink through no bad motives, but because it was the anniversary of the day on which he landed at the Crimea. He was fined 2s. 6d. Patrick Curtin, Patrick Roche, Edmond and Maurice Fitzmaurice were charged by the police with kicking at doors in the town, and otherwise behaving themselves in a disorderly manlier, Curtin, being a returned convict, was sentenced to a fortnight’s and each of the others to a week’s imprisonment.—The Court adjourned.
TRALEE TOWN COMMISSIONERS.—A meeting of this body was to have taken place today, but a sufficient number to form a quorum was not in attendance. The intended meeting was consequently

The 1918 General Election was significant in many ways. Not only was it the first election in which women could stand, it was also the first time that women over 30 who met a property qualification could vote. Interestingly, the press labelled 1918 as the ‘women’s election’.
Constance Markievicz was selected as a Sinn Féin candidate for Dublin St Patrick’s. Markievicz was in Holloway prison during the election for her involvement in anti-conscription activities during the First World War, and she had previously been imprisoned for her involvement in the Easter Rising in 1916. Indeed, the only reason she was not executed for treason was because she was a woman.
The National Archives holds a large amount of material on Markievicz and her election campaign in the Home Office and Colonial Office records. These records provide a unique insight into Markievicz’s election campaign, both in terms of the logistics of how it was run and the causes that she championed.
