HAPPY NEW YEAR

Well having been off for the last couple of weeks over the Christmas period our Athea Parish Newsletter is back with a Bang for the New Year and can I wish each and every reader all the very best for 2023 along with fellow correspondents and Domhnall and Lilian at The Helm as always.

Our little Village was the Hive Of Activity over the Christmas Period which was great to see. The Christmas Eve Masses along with Christmas Day Mass were all very well attended by families and all those relatives and friends who were visiting Athea over the Christmas period. The Altar looked beautiful coupled with the flowers and Christmas Tree and of course both the school and adult Choirs must be complimented for their beautiful singing. In a nutshell, well done to everyone who made Christmas in Athea so lovely.

St. Stephen’s Day, as usual, had the Wrenboys in action, maybe not as many as usual, but those that Braved The Elements were thoroughly enjoyed.

As I do my few lines this Sunday night the weather is Wet and Windy and it seems it will be with us for another while. However do not despair we are already a week into January and no doubt things will be improving maybe Slowly but definitely Surely.

The RTE Cameras were up at the GAA pitch on Thursday evening last filming for Operation Transformation and a great crowd gathered there, all very eager to get the New Year off to a flying start. Be on the Look Out this week as to the best of my knowledge Athea will be featured on the programme this Thursday.

Sympathy is offered to the following who lost loved ones over the Christmas period. Anne Barrett of Templeathea  was bereaved of her brother Tom Cox of Castleisland recently. Many offered their sympathy at Tagney’s funeral parlour. May he rest in peace.

The death also occurred last week of Jim O’Connor of Abbeyfeale. Jim was well known  and recently appeared on the fund raising calendar in Abbeyfeale. Sincere sympathy to his family relatives and a large circle of friends.

The death has also occurred in England  of Frank Sheehy, formerly  of Templeathea. There will be more on the funeral arrangements  later. Sincere sympathy to his relations here in Athea, family  and friends. May he rest in peace.

Happy birthday wishes are extended to Cuz Enright of Galeside, Athea, who celebrated his 80th birthday recently. Wishing him many more years of health and happiness.

Happy 50th birthday wishes to Anne, daughter of Nora and Seanie Mahony, who celebrated her birthday  recently with a gathering of family and friends all having a great night.

Tom Jack William was the name of the horse that brought excitement to ATHEA  recently  when he won a great race  for owners Leo and Eiblish Geoghegan and their family. And wasn’t it wonderful to see local trainer Eoin McCarthy  doing so well recently with his team over in Templeathea, an up and coming young trainer who is really making a name for himself in the racing circles, here’s to his future success.

Once again a very Happy 2023:-
