Mike Hayes, Dirreen R.I.P.

On Saturday evening last a large congregation attended to pay their respects to Mike Hayes and his sister Catherine Forde formerly of Dirreen. Mike passed in late 2020 after an illness.
A number of Mike’s team mates and friends from the 1968 team attended the mass and met up afterwards in the Top of the Town to reminisce about old times. Those who knew Mike reveled about his footballing ability down through the years.

Áth an tSléibhe  3-05 Na Piarsaigh 1-07

This was a very tough game played in difficult conditions in Glin on Sunday morning last. We played against the wind in the first half and were under a lot of pressure, with the opposition kicking some very good points. We trailed by 6 points to 1 thanks to a Billy Hogan free after 20 minutes. The turning point in the match came with 5 mins to half time when a break out of defence by James Hunt set up James Broderick for a goal, which we followed with a point from play by Rory Cleary after a good pass from  the influential Evan Curry. This left us just a point behind at half time with elements in our favour for the second period.

The second half was tough going with both teams making lots of mistakes, but we eventually carved out a four point lead, thanks to a massive team effort. We had some fierce defending to do in the last few minutes to claim a deserved win and a place in the Div 2 Shield final against the winners of St. Kierans and Galbally.

Team. Tomás Ahern, Séamus Dillane, Calum Buckley, Breen Cunningham, James Lee, James Hunt, Colm McNamara, Evan Curry, (0-01)Aiden Healy, Rory Cleary (1-01) James Broderick(2-01) Charlie  Mcdonagh, Sean McKenery, Conor Fitzgerald, Billy Hogan(capt) (0-02), subs, Sean Moore, Tadhg Ahern, Aiden Fogarthy, Rory Mahony, Jim Culhane and Fergal Leahy.  Adam Bennett was out injured.
