The death has taken place of Eileen O’Connor (nee Aherne), Carrigkerry West, on Wednesday, October 19, peacefully at her residence. Wife of the late Sean and former Sacristan in Carrigkerry Church. Reposing took place at St. Mary’s Church, Carrigkerry on Friday, October 21, from 5pm to 7pm. The Requiem Mass was concelebrated by Fr. Michael Noonan, Fr. Dan Lane and Fr. Tim Curtin, on Saturday at 11.30am, followed by burial afterwards in Ardagh cemetery. Sympathy to her son Patrick, daughters, Mary (Hennessy) and Sharon (Quinn), sons-in-law Dan and Mike, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces, relatives and friends.
Eileen was a gentle person who always had a smile for everyone. She was a former sacristan in St Mary’s Church Carrigkerry. With husband Sean from 1994, until his passing in 2006 up to retirement in 2017. A woman of deep faith she was blessed with a long and fulfilled life, lived to the full serving family and community. She enjoyed her leisure time which included many outings and trips to Ardagh Social Club and the Desmond Complex, Newcastle West. She liked dancing, watching sport, and playing cards. May She rest in Peace.
The death has taken place of Christy Moloney The Cross, Ardagh, peacefully, on Monday, October 17, at Milford Care Centre. Husband of the late Kitty and former caretaker of Ardagh School. Reposing took place at Reidy’s Funeral Home, Newcastle West, on Thursday, October 20 from 6pm to 8pm. The Requiem Mass was celebrated at St Molua’s Church Ardagh on Friday at 11.30am, followed by burial afterwards in the adjoining Cemetery. Sympathy to his sons Edmond, Peter and Thomas, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, brother Joe, sister Eileen, brothers-in-law, sister-in-law, nephews, nieces, extended family, neighbours and friends. May he rest in Peace.

St Kieran’s defeated Caherline by 1-15 to 1-11 in the County Under 21 Hurling Championship played at Caherconlish on Sunday, October 16. They led by 1-10 to 0-5 at half time. Creeves Celtic lost 4-1 away to Glin Rovers in the Desmond Premier League Cup Group B on Sunday, October 16. Carrig Celtic lost 3-1 (Pa O’Sullivan) away to Dromore United B in Division 3. In Division 1 of the Desmond Ladies League Cup Kilcolman Rovers defeated Breska Rovers B 2-0 at home with Mia Forrestal and an own goal the scorers. Creeves Celtic had no match.
In the latest issue of the Green and White Limerick GAA Youth Magazine the return of underage school competitions is featured. Michael Lynch, Carrigkerry and Alex O’Sullivan, Kilcolman were on the West Limerick squad in the Sarsfield Cup. Michael Lynch, Carrigkerry, Cian O’Mahony and Alex O’Sullivan, Kilcolman were on the West Limerick squad in the Mackey Cup. Amy Mullins, Ardagh was on the West Limerick squad that won the Neville Cup. In the Primary Game matches, Alex O’Sullivan, Michael Lynch and Amy Mullins represented Limerick in the Munster matches.
The Ardagh Development Association and Saint Kieran’s GAA joint weekly lottery draw took place on Monday, October 17. The numbers drawn were 6,7,18,23, and there was no winner of the €9,900 Jackpot. Congratulations to the five lucky dip winners who received €40 each: Pat O’Connor, c/o Moore’s Bar, Jane, c/o Greaney’s, Mary Harnett, Ardagh, Susan Moriarty, Ardagh (Online), Jim Long, Feenagh. Congratulations to Tom Mackessy, Coolanoran, who won €385 in the West Limerick 102fm 50/50 draw, held on Friday, October 21. The CD in aid of Friends of St Ita’s titled Autumn Melodies which was launched at the Longcourt Hotel Newcastle West, on Friday, September 23, is selling very well. It was compiled for people to enjoy and to support the work the Friends continue to do at Newcastle West Community Hospital. The CD is produced by local singers Theresa Doyle McMahon and Siobhán Doody. The CD cost €10 can be purchased at Tony Hayes Shop, Sonas Health Store, Post Office and St Ita’s Hospital Reception all in Newcastle West, Pat Costello’s Shop, Templeglantine, Collins Pharmacy, Abbeyfeale, Roche’s Shop, Shanagolden and from committee members.
Communities across Limerick are being urged to donate gift-filled shoeboxes for children affected by poverty in Eastern Europe and Africa this Christmas. The Shoebox Appeal Week runs from Monday, October 31 to Sunday, November 6. This week aims to encourage people to think about the single impact, joy and smiles that a shoebox brings to the child who receives it. All people have to do is find an empty shoebox, wrap it in Christmas paper and fill it with gifts for a boy or a girl aged between 2 and 14, give online or attach a €4 donation and bring it to a local drop off point before November 6. Coolcappa Parents Association are holding a Children’s Halloween Disco and Fancy Dress at Coolcappa Community Centre on Friday, October 28, from 6.30pm to 8.30pm. Admission €5 per child and €10 per family. All children from ages 12 and under are welcome to attend. Parental supervision please. The Limerick GAA Club draw for 2022 continues with the October Draw taking place on Saturday 29. The annual Bodhrán Competition will be held at the Top of the Town in Athea on Saturday October 29, at 6pm. The four events will be open competition, confined competition, ladies’ competition and juniors’ competition.
Donie Nolan and Taylors Cross Céilí band will provide the music for the Patrick O’Keeffe Céilí at An Riocht Athletic Clubhouse, Castleisland on Sunday, October 30, from 3 to 6pm. The admission is €10, and tea will be served. Johnny Reidy band will be on stage at the River Island Hotel for another Céilí on Bank Holiday Monday, October 31, from 2 to 5pm.
A fundraising dance in aid of Noonan Christmas Lights will be held at the Woodlands House Hotel, Adare on Tuesday, November 1. Music by Michael Collins Band and a raffle will be held for charity.
The annual Fair of Athea will be held around the village on Saturday, November 5. Weather permitting it promises to be an enjoyable day out and all are welcome.
The Irish Rambling House organised by Joe Harrington and Kay O’Leary from Lyreacrompane, Kerry are holding two shows in Harrow, London on Saturday, November 5, and Sunday, November 6. They have been entertaining the exiles with their show for over twenty years, but Covid has restricted the tour since 2019. The well-known Cork duo Sean O’Se and Elle Marie Dwyer, will be joined by a number of the regular musicians, singers, dancers and story tellers. Readers are asked to inform their relatives and friends in the London area of the show dates so they can attend. The tickets are by reservation only from Patrick O’Connell at 073 12032905.
