The death has taken place of Daniel (Danny) Hartnett, Carrigkerry peacefully at University Hospital Limerick. Reposing at Riedy’s Funeral Home Newcastle West on Tuesday, September 6, from 6pm to 7.30pm. His Requiem Mass was celebrated in St Mary’s Church, Carrigkerry on Wednesday at 12 noon, followed by burial in Calvary Cemetery. Sympathy to his wife Mary, son Joe, daughters Helen, Maggie, Ann, sons in law, daughter in law, brother Jim, sisters Mary, Ellen, Tina, Cathy, Debbie, and the late Annette, grandchildren Zoe, Liam, Joe, Joseph, Megan, Olivia, Josh, Eoin, Daniel, John, Grace, great grandchildren Isabelle, Oliver, Riley, nephews, nieces, and extended family members. May he rest in Peace.
The death has taken place of Timmy Murphy, Knockfinisk, Athea, peacefully at Milford Hospice, Limerick on Sunday, September 4. Pre-deceased by his wife Phyllis (nee Daly) parents Josephine and Tim. Reposing at Kelly’s Funeral Home, Athea on Tuesday, September 6, from 5.30pm to 8pm. His Requiem Mass was celebrated in St Bartholomew’s Church Athea on Wednesday at 12 noon, followed by burial in Calvary Cemetery, Newcastle West. Sympathy to his sisters Eileen Quinn, Glin, Mary Dore, Castlemahon, Chrissie O’Connor, Tarbert, Josephine Culhane, Glin, Nora Fitzgerald, Castletown, aunt Maggie, uncle Paddy, nephews, nieces, sister-in-law, brothers in law, cousins, neighbours and friends. May he rest in Peace.
Mary O’Connor (nee Mangan), Shrulawn, Foynes passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 3, in her 99th year. Reposing at her residence on Monday, September 5, from 4pm to 8pm. Her Requiem Mass was celebrated in Robertstown Church on Tuesday at 12.30pm, followed by burial in Kilbradern Cemetery. Sympathy to her family and may she rest in Peace.
The fifth music, song and set dancing night was held on Tuesday, September 6, at the Flag Floor Glensharrold, Carrigkerry. A smaller crowd was in attendance, but all enjoyed the dancing and singing, and lovely food provided. The entertainment continues on Tuesdays from 9pm to 11.30pm over the coming weeks. There is no Eircode, but the venue is just past V94 39N9. Teas are served, admission is € 5, and all are welcome.
St Kieran’s Heritage Association held their first monthly meeting since March 2020, at the community centre, Ardagh on Wednesday, September 7. A baker’s dozen people were in attendance and Covid precautions were observed. Chairperson John P O’Sullivan welcomed all and new secretary Mary Byrnes read the minutes. A vote of thanks was expressed to previous secretary Mary Kury (who has taken a step back at present) for her dedication and sterling work since 2016. With Covid still on the horizon it was decided to scale down events for the coming months. A lot of discussion took place with future projects aired and initial plans put in place. Items discussed included putting in place a footpath to the Ardagh Chalice stile, Street information notice board. P.A. System, Rathronan work, meeting with OPW. Next meeting fixed for Wednesday, October 12, at 8pm in Ardagh Hall.
Creeves Celtic defeated Kilcornan 4-3 away on penalties after a 1-1 (Sean King) draw in the Desmond Premier Division Group B League match on Sunday, September 4. Carrig Celtic defeated Shannonside B 4-2 away in Division 3, Group A, of the Desmond League Cup.
St Kieran’s defeated St Senan’s by 1-6 to 1-3 in Under 15 football at Coolcappa on Monday, September 5. St Kieran’s defeated Croom by 4-11 to 1-10 in Under 17 football at Coolcappa on Friday, September 9. St Kieran’s lost to Blackrock by 1-4 to 0-6 in the County Under 13 Division 3 semi final in Croagh on Saturday, September 10. St Kieran’s Rounders team were defeated by Sporting Limerick 22-14 in the final of the Munster Intermediate Blitz at Mallow on Sunday, September 4. The team are improving and put in a great performance at a higher grade this second season fielding a team.
The Ardagh Development Association and Saint Kieran’s GAA joint weekly lottery draw took place on Monday, September 5. The numbers drawn were 4, 8, 14, 17, and there was no winner of the €9,300 Jackpot. Congratulations to the five lucky dip winners who received €40 each: J,A,N,E, c/o Denis Greaney, Susan Moriarty (Online), Diarmuid McSweeney (Online) and Maisie Moroney, Coolcappa, Anne Holyhead, c/o Denis Greaney. Next Monday night’s jackpot will be €9,400. People can play online using club force on the club’s Facebook page, with 6pm on Monday evening the deadline. The tickets are also on sale at the usual outlets and all support will be appreciated.
Congratulations to Christy O’Connor, Main Street Ardagh, who won €210 in the West Limerick 102fm 50/50 draw, held on Friday, September 9. The tickets cost €2, or 3 for €5 and they are available from volunteers, in local shops, (including Moloneys Carrigkerry, and Denis Greaney’s Shop Ardagh) or from the radio station. The McCormack Kelly School of dancing resume their classes in the Community Centre, Carrigkerry on Wednesday, September 14 at 7pm for beginners and advanced dancers. The Sean Nós class will begin at 8pm. Classes will resume in the Community Centre, Ardagh on Friday, September 16 at 7pm, for beginners and advanced dancers. Céilí dancing classes for school children will resume in Carrigkerry Community Centre on Friday, September 16, at 6.45pm and all are welcome to attend.
A new CD in aid of Friends of St Ita’s titled Autumn Melodies will be launched on Culture Night, for people to enjoy and to support the work the Friends continue to do at Newcastle West Community Hospital. The CD is produced by locals Theresa Doyle McMahon and Siobhán Doody. The launch of the eagerly anticipated CD will take place at the Longcourt House Hotel on Friday, September 23 at 8pm. Entry is free and the CD will be for sale on the night. There are songs to suit every taste on the CD all from local artists. The artists featured include Siobhán Doody, Theresa Doyle McMahon, Michael Enright, Brian Hartnett, Emmet Scanlon, Michael Nash, Fr. Tim Curtin, Canon Tony Mullins, Fr. Liam Enright. A great night of entertainment provided by the artists is promised and all support will be appreciated.
