DEATHS:  We offer our sincere sympathy to the family of the late John Leahy, Bogmount on his recent death following so shortly after the death of his wife.  May he rest in peace.

We also offer our sincere sympathies to the wife and family of the late John Sheehy, Knocknacrohy on his sudden death in a traffic accident.  May he rest in peace.

OSKARS:  The launch of the Oskars  will be taking place in Steve Smith’s Ploughman Bar in the Square on Wednesday, October 5 at 8.30pm, Steve played a starring role as the Sherrif in the film Misery.  This fundraiser for St. Ita’s Sheltered Housing has been rescheduled from October 2020 to Friday, October 21,2022.   All previously purchased tickets will be honoured and if you were involved in the filming contact your producer.  This will be a real Oscar moment ( as in Holywood!)  for the people who took part in the various films with presentations to those deemed to be the best actor, best comedian etc. etc. so start thinking about making your hair and beauty appointments and not forgetting limo reservations because this is your night to shine.

MENTAL HEALTH WEEK:  On Tuesday, October 11 Dr. David Coleman Psychologist will give a talk in the Longcourt Hotel, NCW at 7pm. Dr. Coleman is known for his blend of expertise, humour and a common sense approach to helping children and teenagers to grow and develop.  Everyone welcome. Free admission and a night that every parent should make it their business to attend.

COFFEE MORNING:   On Thursday, September 29 as part of the 30th Birthday National Coffee morning for your local Hospice Mary MacArthur will host a Coffee morning at her home in Caherhayes from 11-4pm 11am.   Proceeds will be divided between Milford Hospice/Care Centre, Limerick & Recovery Haven Cancer Support House, Kerry. A ROSE BY ANY OTHER NAME: Glórach  broke new ground over the weekend in their quest to bring new,  innovative and exciting shows to Abbeyfeale. The one woman show performed by a Cork woman with roots in Castleisland  “A Rose By Any Other Name” who had just returned from a 13 performance run  at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival where it received  rave reviews. The show dealt with the Shakespeare authorship question, with Rose charting the colourful journey of her real-life experiences to discover who is the real Shakespeare? From clues in Cambridge, to proof in Padua, and validations in Venice, she told the story of her search and talk of an eye opener for those of us who suffered through Shakespeare in our youth.   Exciting plans for Glórach over the winter so keep an eye out for posters and fliers around the town.

SINGING CLUB: The West Limerick Singing Club meet on the first Friday of the month at Philip Enright’s, Church St. from 9pm.

SET DANCING with Timmy Woulfe Monday night sat 8pm in the Marian Hall, Moyvane, newcomers especially catered for.

DROMTRASNA CHALLENGE 2022: “Delighted to announce that the Dromtrasna Challenge will take place on Saturday, October 22 in aid of Milford Care Centre.  Registration will open shortly.

Volunteer with Limerick West Special Olympics Club

Limerick West Special Olympics club are seeking volunteers to accompany adult athletes on a bus from the Abbeyfeale area to Bocce training in Newcastle West and home again on Tuesday evenings.  We are also looking for volunteers to assist with bocce training (similar to bowls) each week.  Our athletes have competed at both regional and national level so you could learn a fun new game with a great group of people!  If you have some time to spare on a Tuesday eve, we would be delighted to hear from you.  Drop in to the Community Centre, NCW at 7pm to meet us or ring Deirdre at 0863628629 for more info.

COMMUNITY FIRST RESPONDERS: Voluntary service Community First Responders. Provide a quick response to certain types of emergency callouts. The North East Kerry CFR Group covers, Abbeyfeale, Glin, Athea, Duagh, Knockanure, and Listowel and parts of Moyvane, Ballylongford, and Tarbert. If interested in helping to get a group set up in Abbeyfeale contact 087 6863 726.  There has been a lot of talk recently about the wait time for ambulances and if there was a group of first responders locally they could provide much needed reassurance to people who are having a medical episode.
