The Well and Grotto will remain closed for the duration of the Mass and will reopen at 1.30pm after which you are most welcome to come for private prayer.

POETRY: Dairena Ní Chinnéide, the new Poet Laureate for Listowel as part of the Poetry Town initiative, which will take place in 20 towns across the country between September 10 and 18.

BISHOP RAY MARKING THE CENTENARY OF THE LEGION OF MARY
The Legion of Mary is celebrating its centenary. Monday September 7th, 2021, marks exactly one hundred years since Frank Duff and his first associates held the first ever meeting. Congratulations, thank you, and every blessing on all Legionaries in our diocese and worldwide.
The Legion has always insisted it is parish based. It strives to promote prayer and devotion to Our Lady, and to encourage people to put faith at the centre of their lives. In the past many parishes in our dioceses had a strong Praesidium. This is a good time to remember this local history. In recent decades the Legion has not been very strong in Ireland. As our diocese transitions to
a greater reliance on lay ministry, may the Legion of Mary enjoy a new springtime among us.
In contrast, the Legion has gone from strength to strength in many countries worldwide, – it is present in 170 countries with ‘several million’ members. Truly it has been a great gift from Ireland to the world. Its central organisation continues to be based in Ireland. Three names stand out as regards the Legion, many hope they will one day be recognised as saints:
Frank Duff 1899 – 1980; Edel Quinn 1907 – 1944, Died on mission in Kenya, and Alfie Lamb 1932 – 1959, Died on mission in Argentina. All past legionaries fondly remember the Legion of Mary handbook and the Legion Prayer. Both continue to be regarded as ‘invariable’, 100%
Unchanged in every country.

Irish traditional fiddler and music teacher, was held at the Eagle Tavern,
14th St. at Ninth Ave., on Saturday, September 26.
Martin was to have performed that month at the Eagle Tavern with his long-time musical associate Mike Rafferty, a flute player originally from Ballinakill, Galway. Instead, the Eagle
presented a musical tribute to Martin Mulvihill featuring some of the musicians who learned from and played with Martin.

The worst single episode of loss of life suffered by the Irish Defence Forces since the Civil War.

By September 1941 the Second World War had been ravaging the continent of Europe for two full years. Ireland had successfully remained neutral, owing in no small part to the rapid expansion of the Defence Forces, which had by now reached a strength of 39,000 men.
On the afternoon of 16September, a party of 60 gunners of the Depot Artillery and the Anti-Aircraft Battalion (and a few members of the Engineer Corps) gathered in the military training area of the Glen of Imaal in the Wicklow Mountains. Among them were several young officers who had been commissioned in the field during a serious invasion scare the previous December.
This group of men were receiving instruction in an anti-tank mine designed by the Army Ordnance Corps in May 1940. Consisting of 25 pounds of gelignite in a waterproofed wooden case, it was designed ‘for demolishing bridges or other works and also for use against tanks and mechanical transport’. Nicknamed ‘butter boxes’, 5,400 of these mines were manufactured during the Emergency, and in practice many received rough treatment without incident, often being bounced about in trucks or even on bicycles.

GAMES: In 1960, for the first time, the International Stoke Mandeville Games were held in Rome, Italy, alongside the Olympic Games. These games are now recognized as the first Paralympic Games. (The term “Paralympics” refers to the fact that they are parallel to the Olympics and was retroactively recognized by the International Olympic Committee in 1984.) The Rome event featured 400 athletes, representing 23 countries, with an array of disabilities. After 1960, the Paralympics were held every four years. The first Winter Games were in 1976.
