OUR LADY: “When England returns to Walsingham, Our Lady will return to England.”

This was the prophecy made by Pope Leo XIII in 1893 when speaking to the English bishops about the consecration of England to Mary, the Mother of God. The Pope was recalling England’s ancient title, “Our Lady’s Dowry,” and the medieval Marian shrine linked to it at Walsingham.

No regrets for Kerry Sisters in their haven far from home

By Ted O’Riordan

TWO Franciscan Missionary Sisters who left the parish of Ballymacelligott  as teenagers more than 70 years ago will be jointly, celebrating 140 years of dedicated service to their Order and to the people of the United States in April next.  They are Sr. Virgilius Reidy of Rathanny, Ballymacelligott and Sr. Rita McCarthy of Gortalea. (Break) see paper for full report)

Nomination of Clarence Thomas was announced for the post of  Supreme Court Judge, that nomination was strongly opposed.

The fact that Clarence Thomas was not favoured by the Democratic Party, in power at that time, and that, his skin was black, ensured strong; opposition to his nomination.

At a judicial Senate hearing in, Washington in October, 1991, Clarence Thomas called on, his former maths teacher to be a character” witness on his behalf. Sr Virgilius Reidy travelled to Washington and testified at that Senate hearing, rubbing shoulders with such heavyweight adversaries as Senator Edward Kennedy who opposed the nomination of her former eighth grade pupil. The appointment of Clarence Thomas as Supreme Court Judge was subsequently announced – only the second black American to sit on that bench — to the delight of the Ballymacelligott woman. The Supreme Court, Judge has not forgotten, the part played, by the Franciscan Order in his education in Savannah and has visited the Franciscan Convent in, Tenafly to convey his appreciation, and thanks and, of course, to say hello again to his maths teacher, Sr Virgilius, “with whom he keeps in touch. Gortatlea teenager ‘Rita McCarthy may not have backed a winner the day she took a ‘wrong turn” at Gortatlea, and instead of going to school at Moyderwell, Tralee, cycled to Castleisland races. However, St. Francis was in luck, and she certainly was on a winner. This was what Sr. Rita had, to say when I asked her who or what influenced her to declare for the team of St. Francis of Assisi: “I remember cycling to Castleisland races and as I was about, to leave the town. I met Julann Reidy outside JK, O’Connor’s and she told me she was joining the Franciscans and that was my first introduction to the Order,” said Sr. Rita. The Gortatlea woman also remembers getting, a drive back to Tralee on the same day, compliments of Rhyno Mills, Castleisland: “Just as Julann Reidy and myself were about, to cycle home from Castleisland, Tom O’Connor of Ryhno Mills came along and Julann asked him to put our bikes in the back of the  lorry and the good man obliged,” she said. Sr. Rita recalls-that months later the Franciscan, Director of Vocations, Mother Scholastics, came to Moyderwell School in Tralee and having, in racing parlance, received a  hot tip from, Julann Reidy that Rita McCarthy was a potential recruit, asked to see the young Gortatlea, girl, and, the rest is history Sr. Rita, vividly recalled the day she left Gortatlea Station for Rome many decades ago: ” I left Gortatlea, for Dublin and travelled to London the next day and, arrived at the Franciscan Convent in Rome the day after that to start as a postulant and when, I was professed, I moved to the USA.

Governor, Kathy Hochul,

Four weeks ago, at her swearing-in ceremony following Cuomo’s resignation in disgrace, Hochul paused to thank her “big Irish Catholic” family in forming and supporting her. She is the daughter of a Buffalo steelworker and union organizer, and she received her law degree from The Catholic University of America.  She promised a “fresh, collaborative approach” to state government. “I want people to believe in their government again,” she said. “It’s important to me that people have faith.”

Hochul expressed that faith last week by stepping forth to tell the women of Texas—yes, Texas, some 1,800 miles from Albany—that if their state tells them they can’t have abortions there, well, New Yorkers welcome them with open arms and open doors right into their abortion clinics.

What is Orienteering?

Orienteering is a worldwide sport where the competitor uses a special, detailed map of an area on which a number of controls or checkpoints are marked. The participant decides on a route to reach these specific points or controls, in a specified sequence, as quickly as possible. The controls are marked by orange and white flags and there are markers at each location that allows the course organiser to know you have visited the correct control in the right sequence.

Urban / Street Orienteering takes place in an urban landscape
