Citing his exceptional behavior in prison and evidence that he would be a positive asset on the outside, the state recommended that he go free. Today, at 54, he is.

PLANE: The 41-year-old Italian stunt pilot on Saturday successfully maneuvered a custom-modified Zivko Edge 540 race plane through the twin Çatalca tunnels along the Northern Marmara Highway in Turkey. In total, Costa set five records with his feat: longest tunnel flown through with an airplane, first airplane flight through a tunnel, longest flight under a solid obstacle, first airplane flight through two tunnels and first airplane take off from a tunnel. Only the first was officially recognized with a certificate from Guinness.

(JTA) — Two nights after the Twin Towers fell on 9/11, we were instructed to evacuate our building. There was talk of a potential attack on the nearby Empire State Building. My roommates and I covered our mouths and noses with towels to protect against the still fetid air and walked east from our midtown Manhattan Stern College apartment to get out of the danger zone. Every telephone pole was plastered with hastily printed “MISSING” signs, each with a different smiling face and a phone number to call.

Father Raymond J. de Souza Commentaries

September 9, 2021

Forty years ago, the massive funeral procession of Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński was led by a banner that read, “God gives us such a father and shepherd once in a thousand years.”

He will be beatified on Sept. 12 in Warsaw and known henceforth as “Blessed Stefan Wyszyński.”

But in Poland he will remain always the “Primate of the Millennium,” as that processional banner acknowledged.

Imprisoned for three years (1953-1956) by the communist regime, he emerged a cultural colossus who conducted a nationwide “Great Novena,” nine years of spiritual, cultural and social preparation for the 1,000th anniversary of the baptism of Poland in 966. The Great Novena revealed the true character of the Polish nation, notwithstanding its communist regime.
