UPDATE COVID 19 MESSAGE FROM KERRY DIOCESAN TEAM
Concerning Religious ceremonies within the document “Reframing the challenge continuing our recovery and reconnecting” which outlines the Government plan for the further easing of public health restrictions over the next few weeks. It is great news that we will be able to welcome more people to our churches. The hope is that on October 22nd, 2021 the majority of all public health restrictions will be lifted, but this will be subject to the prevailing public health advice. It is therefore important that all of the current protective measures continue to be observed so as to ensure that our churches remain safe places for people to visit and attend. The incidence rate of Covid-19 within the Diocese remains a cause for concern and for that reason we recommend the following in relation to Baptisms, First Holy Communions & Confirmations: –
- Baptisms – Continue to keep numbers attending Baptisms limited to immediate family members, (including Godparents and Grandparents).
- First Holy Communion & Confirmation – Limit the numbers attending to immediate family only, namely, parents and siblings of the child.
We will review the above recommendations on October 22nd, 2021 should there be a further easing of the public health restrictions. As always, further updates, advice, and information can be found on www.gov.ie or HSE.IE

GOVERNOR: Lord Ventry’s tenant to NY Governor’s Mansion
On Tuesday 17th September 2021, at midnight, Kathy Hochul (born Kathleen Courtney), New York’s first female governor, will take office. Kathy will be moving into the Governor’s Mansion in Albany New York – it has housed governors and their families since 1875. It is at some remove from where the Courtney/Cournane family lived in Ireland in 1875.
Kathy Hochul’s grandfather John was born 31 January 1909, son of John Courtney, Farmer and Bridget O’Shea of Fahamore, Castlegregory. It is at this point that Kerry genealogy becomes complicated. In Kerry the names Courtney and Cournane are interchangeable. Ó Curnáin when anglicised becomes Courtney. As we go back over Kathy’s grandfather, great, great-great and finally gt-gt-gt grandfather we can see both versions of the name used on different Church and Civil records. Kathy’s grandfather John Cournane/Courtney first arrived in South Dakota in 1919. In Kerry we can first find him on the 1911 Census of Ireland aged 2, as John Cournane.

As my guest today argues, a shared bed means shared sleep issues that need to be tackled with shared solutions. Her name is Dr. Wendy Troxel, she’s a clinical psychologist, a sleep specialist, and the author of Sharing the Covers: Every Couple’s Guide to Better Sleep. We begin our conversation by discussing how sleep not only affects people’s relationships, but people’s relationships affect their sleep, and how this bidirectional dynamic can become either a vicious or virtuous cycle, depending on the quality of sleep that a couple gets. We then talk about the various issues couples deal with in sharing a bed, from snoring to a mismatch in temperature preferences. We also get into the complications that come with bringing kids into the picture, and Wendy gives her take on the issue of family co-sleeping. From there we turn to solutions for shared sleep problems, and dig into the idea of sleeping in separate beds. Wendy unpacks the way the taboo around separate sleeping has waxed and waned throughout history, why it works for some couples, and the options for implementing it, from sleeping in separate bedrooms to a more moderate approach called the “Scandinavian Method.” Wendy also gives advice to couples who want to continue to share the same bed, but struggle with the fact that one person is a morning bird and the other is a night owl.

The college has had a devotion to Our Lady of Guadalupe for decades. A Guadalupe Chapel was built at St. Benedict’s Abbey on the college’s campus in 1957. The college built Guadalupe Hall, a residence hall for girls, on campus in 2014 after President Minnis was chosen to be one of the representatives at the Church in America conferences called for in The Church in America by St. John Paul II.
