WEATHER is good, plenty of sunshine and a fresh breeze. Pity some soft leaves and plants were burned during the recent late frost. Early silage is being cut also. Some cattle are still indoors, milking cows are receiving priority on the outside. Land around here still dodgy for cattle, as land is slow to dry.

FAITH it’s a beautiful thing, That little word with the special ring, It’s faith in the things I cannot see, Like knowing my God is always with me, Faith that everything will turn out alright, That my days of darkness will lead into light, Faith that Jesus will take my hand, And guide me through things I don’t understand, That no matter where I roam, far and wide, My God will be there by me side, And until I’m home in Heaven above, I will always know my God’s true love, And until that day He call me home, I will never have to walk alone, To know that someday I’ll hear angels sing Faith, it’s a beautiful thing.

Cllr Sheahan also noted that there are an awful lot of children and young people who have been “exemplary” during the Covid-19 pandemic when their “lives have been turned upside down and they should not be forgotten in the middle of all this”. Cllr Jerome Scanlan said that if respect isn’t nurtured in the home it is very hard to develop it. He proposed that councillors write to all three local TDs about the issues on the  ground in the Newcastle West municipal district. (From Limerick Leader 16 April 2021).

BRYAN MCMAHON: Kerry Writers’ Museum an online lecture about Listowel writer Bryan MacMahon on Thursday, April 22, at 7.30pm – as part of its ongoing series of online lectures about Kerry writers – entitled ‘Bryan MacMahon: Master, Storyman and Friend’.

The illustrated presentation delivered by a Listowel native and lifelong friend of Bryan’s, Éamon Ó Murchú

“I have been greatly privileged that, in my journey through life, I have had, as a guide, ‘the Master’, my friend Bryan MacMahon,” Éamon said ahead of the event.

“He provided me with a unique, life-long education as teacher and friend.”

Born in Listowel in 1909, Bryan MacMahon was a folklorist; short-story writer; poet; playwright and producer of plays; novelist, lecturer and ballad-maker.

He also wrote for pageants, radio features, and television scripts.

His first play, The Bugle in the Blood, was produced in the Abbey Theatre, Dublin, in 1949. His 1952 novel, Children of The Rainbow, was published in Britain, the United States and Canada. Bryan is remembered fondly in Listowel as The Master, having served as teacher and later Principal at Scoil Réalta na Maidine or the Boys’ Primary School, where he started his education as a pupil.

In his lecture, Éamon will comment on the life and times of Bryan MacMahon; his warm personality; the philosophy of life that permeated his teaching and writing; his many talents; and his lifelong contribution to his hometown of Listowel.

The lecture delivered live on Zoom. However, we will be live streaming the lecture on our YouTube channel which can be viewed at the following link: https://youtu.be/szwqt4gJt4k

CLIMATE Action; Ireland’s new Agri-Food Strategy to 2030 was published at the end of last week, shedding light on how Irish farming will look over the coming years.

The strategy is divided into four ‘missions’. These are:

Mission 1 – A climate-smart, environmentally sustainable agri-food sector;

Mission 2 – Viable and resilient primary producers with enhanced well-being;

Mission 3 – Food which is safe; nutritious and appealing; and trusted and valued at home and abroad;

Mission 4 – An innovative, competitive and resilient agri-food sector, driven by technology and talent.

The IFA said it has been engaging at all levels to “ensure that farming is treated fairly in the climate action process”. The organisation highlighted a point in the new Climate Bill which states that, in implementing the bill, the minister “shall” have regard to “the special economic and social role of agriculture including with regards to the distinct characteristics of biogenic methane”. LIMERICKMAN; Statue of County Limerick slave owner is removed from US city- By Bernie English – April 16, 2021

According to Norman G. Rukert’s “Historic Canton,” Captain John O’Donnell was born in 1749. In his youth, O’Donnell “ran away to sea and found himself in India, amassing a sizeable fortune before he was thirty.” As an employee of the British East India Company, O’Donnell lived in India for 16 years.

In 1786, O’Donnell purchased 11 acres of land in Baltimore, which eventually grew to more than 1,900 acres. O’Donnell named his plantation Canton, which is what English speakers at the time called the Chinese port city of Guangzhou. Records show that he kept 36 enslaved people on his plantation. O’Donnell had seven children with his wife Sarah Chew Elliott. It is believed only one, Elliot, returned to his father’s native Ireland to study at Trinity College Dublin.

PARENTS: 25 Apr International Parental Alienation Awareness Day – Resources.  Today is the International Parental Alienation Awareness Day. This day highlights a particular form of domestic abuse that takes place when one parent tries to distance his or her children, without reason or justification, from the other parent when a marriage or relationship ends. Such a denial of the rights of children to have a loving relationship with both parents has long-lasting and damaging consequences for a child. For more information about the issue log on to www.alienated.ie.

FAIRTRADE is an action under Climate Action and can be used in a number of categories in the National TidyTowns Competition. It will be an action in the Newcastle West Tidy Towns group application for 2021.

HELP AFRICA: Self Help Africa was created in the immediate aftermath of the Ethiopian Famine of 1984/5 to deliver long-term solutions to the problem of hunger and extreme poverty in the region.

The IFA supported the shipment and distribution of 2,000t of Cara Donegal seed potatoes to famine-affected communities in Ethiopia – one of the first major projects carried out by the Self Help.

That initiative and others were spearheaded by former IFA president, the late Joe Rea, and was followed in the late 1980s with support for programmes of irrigated horticultural production promoted by Self Help Africa in the Meki and Marako regions of southern Ethiopia.

OLD PAPERS:

PUBLIC DINNER IN LISTOWELL, TO MR. KEANE. We understand that the independent and public spirited inhabitants of Listowel, intend to give Mr. Keane of that town a public dinner, as testimony  of their-regard for the important service he has rendered this county? by his successful opposition to the exaction of illegal tolls & customs at the Fairs of Listowel . When considered that there are 26 Fairs in Listowel in the year, and one hundred and four markets, it cannot be questioned but Mr. Keane has conferred, very important benefits on his native county by his manly and uncompromising Opposition to those most oppressive imposts upon the industry of the people. Mr.eane has we understand, at his own expense, procured Potatoe measures for the use of the People, without fee or reward.

LATE AFFRAY IN LISTOWEL. Parturiunt Montes Nascetur  ridiculus Mus.

The King at the prosecution of John Francis Hewson  of Ennismore, Esq. against John Hilliard and Henry Hilliard, Esqrs. Surely it must be in the recollection of our readers that the Ultras in the neighbourhood of Listowel, chagrined at the defeat of the Knight of Kerry, gave every opposition in the month of May last, to a peaceable demonstration of public feeing which was being paid to William Hilliard. Esq., of Ballyhorgan, for his liberality at the late-Election. In this affair Captain Hewson, “late of the Tarbert Fencibles” cut rather a conspicuous figure, and upon an  exparte statement which was made to the Chief Secretary, the Crown was induced to prosecute, which for the character of the present  Government we sincerely regret. After this days proceedings, will the Anti-reformers dare continue to libel the character of that neighbourhood and we boldly ask, has this procession turned out to be what Mr. Hewson and his Boroughmongering friends have represented, namely ” an Insurrectionary movement of the Physical force of the neighbourhood ?” Our readers may easily guess from whom this sentence has been quoted.

FRIDAY, 29th JULY 1831.

This day at the sitting of the Court, Sergeant Goold, on the part of the Crown, applied for liberty to send up Bills of Indictment to the Grand Jury, against two Gentlemen, for an assault upon, and preventing a Magistrate in the execution of his duty, it being a case the speedy decision of which was of vast consequence to the peace of the county

Baron Pennefather- I see nothing in this case to authorize me to do so, or make it a precedent. Can’t justice be done at the Sessions ?

Sergeant Goold- My Lord, Mr. Hewson received a letter from Mr. Stanley, saying it was a fit prosecution for the Assizes. Court.-—Then if you, Mr. Sergeant, as representative of the King’s Attorney-General, tell me from the circumstances you think it a fit prosecution for the Assizes, I shall try it. The Learned Sergeant spoke in so low a tone, we could not catch what he said. The Court ultimately allowed the bills to be sworn. At 4 o’clock, Baron Pennefather addressed the Learned Sergeant, and said he’d recommend him not to press the case, that really the county was in so peaceable a state, Justice could be done sufficiently at the Sessions, or let it stand until next Assizes. Sergeant Goold—I shall do whatever the Court pleases, however, I will speak with your Lordship. Court.—Now, Mr. Sergeant ? Sergeant.—No my Lord, after Court.

30TH JULY.

It being understood the case would be tried this morning, at the sitting of the Court, a little before the hour the Court was adjourned to, crowds were about the door, each anxious to hear the circumstances and witness the result. When the doors were opened, the rush was indescribable. At a little after 10 o’clock, Baron Pennefather entered the Court. The Traversers having appeared at the side Bar, they were  arraigned for a common assault, a riot, and obstructing Mr. Hewson, as a Magistrate. Mr. Hewson examined by Sergeant Goold. Recollects The 29th of May last; was i

Listowel on that day, was A Sunday; got a letter from the Police Constable; In consequence attended in Listowel; oncoming to Listowel was informed— Mr. Walsh for Prisoners objected to the evidence as illegal.

Court—Certainly no evidence. Mr. Hewson—Proceeded to the bridge of Listowel with the Police; saw a party with ribbons and flags coming towards Listowel  consisting of over 1000 men ; was waiting on the bridge for the purpose of stopping them ; met Rev. Mr. Mahony, P.P. Who asked witness if he intended to disperse the people, told him he did ; Mr. Mahony begged of him  to allow him half an hour and that he would disperse them; heard them call him Nicknames; called him Boroughmonger,— (laughter-)—and Anti-Reformer. (Immense laughter).

Mr. King—I wonder you survived it, Mr. Hewson. ls it for this you indict the prisoners. Baron Pennefather—In that case, Mr. King, half the house of Commons should be indicted. (Roars of laughter.) Sergeant Goold —And my Lord, we’d try them all herein a batch.

Examination continued;. Said if they did not disperse he should read the Proclamation; Mr. Leonard, a Professional Gentleman, who was standing near him, told  him that the Act authorising that Proclamation expired ; then read the Proclamation under the Riot Act. Mr. Leonard told the people that Mr. Hewson having read the Riot Act, they ought disperse, as the consequence may be fatal to themselves; in consequence of which they dispersed ; they saw another party coming from Listowel with a tree on a car, and a flag on the top of the tree.

Court—What colour was It. Mr. Hewson—Believes it was green, Mr.Supple—Was it not orange, and green, Mr Hewson—I am no Judge, ”(Immense laughter.) Mr. Hewson—At the head of this party Mr. Henry Hilliard was on foot, and Mr. J. Hilliard on horseback; remonstrated with Mr J. Hilliard ; called to Mr. Jackson, C.C P, & told the Police to stop the car ; took hold of the head of the horse, with both hands, and received from a person he believed to be on horseback, but whose name he could not tell, several blows of a whip ; did not tell the people he was a Magistrate, sent for a party of the lOth Foot, and followed the people about a mile, until stopped by Mr. Mahony, P.P. lodged information’s before Mr. Harnett.

Cross examined by Holwell Walsh, Esq. I am glad to set you in such humour, Mr. Hewson. Never heard of a Maypolo on the 29th of May ; never danced round a Maypole.

To the Court—These people had no sticks and before the car was stopped, there was disposition to riot ; none of the crowd coming  from Listowel could have heard the Riot Act read ; they might have been coming  from mass..

After the examination of two other witnesses, for the prosecution, Counsel for the Crown, seeing the absurdity of pressing the case, proposed that the traversers should make an apology, to which their Counsel objected, strongly urging there was no blow given.

Court—Would recommend the traversers to say they had no intention to strike Mr. Hewson.

Mr. King—We have no objection ; it was merely an Election squabble, and the neighbourhood of Listowel has been perfectly tranquil’.

Sergeant Goold—The Gentleman at the other side would wish to represent it as an immaculate spot.

Baron Pennefather—I have considerable  experience in this county, and am happy to say that its tranquillity is undisturbed.—I  would strongly recommend the Gentry, not to permit party feelings, to creep in between them. They should come together and unite in preserving the peace. The issue   was then handed to the Jury who brought in a verdict of NOT GUILTY. Counsel for the Crown—Messrs, Goold, Wolfe, and Plunkett. Agent, Mathew Barrington. Counsel for the Traversers—Messrs, Walsh, King, and Gibson. Agents, Messrs, Supple and Leonard.

Subject: Phone Scam

HI all,

On a more serious note, I received a phone call this morning and should have known by the number – it had a 0032 International prefix – but in my defence, it was early and I wasn’t fully functioning. The caller, a middle Eastern gentleman,  purported to be from an overwatch group for Ireland’s internet service providers including Eir, Sky Virginmedia.

He didn’t ask for any of my personal details or logins or passwords. He asked me to perform a speedtest on my pc. I used Speedtest by Ookla and he asked for the results. He then asked me to go to Teamviewer.com and at the bottom of the page click ‘download me’. This is a very professional looking website. When the download was complete alarm bells started ringing. It was an application that would have given him ‘Remote Control’ or remote access of my pc.

At this point I rang my service provider and they assured me it was a scam. Virginmedia have taken note of it, the phone he used, the process he went through and will report it throughout their organisation. I am computer savvy, I’m usually up-to-speed and diligent with what I do or don’t open with regard to emails AND I was still caught out.

BE PC SECURITY WISE

Thanks- Fred Cahill

Family Love: Vocation and Path to Holiness

Heavenly Father,

We come before You to praise You

and to thank You for the great gift of the family.

We pray to You for all families

consecrated by the Sacrament of Matrimony.

May they rediscover each day

the grace they have received,

and as small domestic Churches,

may they know how to witness to Your presence

and to the love with which Christ loves the Church.

We pray to You for all families faced with difficulty and suffering

caused by illness or circumstances of which only You know.

Sustain them and make them aware

of the path to holiness upon which You call them,

so that they might experience Your infinite mercy

and find new ways to grow in love.

We pray to You for children and young people:

may they encounter You and respond joyfully

to the vocation You have in mind for them;

We pray for parents and grandparents: may they be aware

that they are signs of the fatherhood and motherhood of God

in caring for the children who, in body and spirit, You entrust to them;

and for the experience of fraternity

that the family can give to the world.

Lord, grant that each family

might live their specific vocation to holiness in the Church

as a call to become missionary disciples,

in the service of life and peace,

in communion with our priests, religious,

and all vocations in the Churc

Bless the World Meeting of Families.

Amen.

Knockdown News-20/04/2021

By Peg Prendeville

I extend sympathy to the Langan and Lynch families on the death of Dan Lynch, (brother to Delia) in Chicago on Monday.

I am getting accustomed to driving to Dublin every week to see Jim in the Rehab in Dunlaoire. As it is essential travel I do not feel guilty seeing the countryside and I take pleasure in admiring the various scenes as I go. I am thankful too that Jim has a nice room with a view of the Dublin mountains where we used to hike with our social club when we were young Civil Servants in Dublin in the 70’s.  Last Thursday was a glorious day – in Dublin anyhow – so after my visit I walked the pier in Dunlaoire. It takes twenty minutes from one end to the other and twenty back again. It was great to get the fresh sea air, hear the sound of the waves and generally see people out and about enjoying themselves while also keeping a respectful distance from others. I may get another chance to do it as Jim will be there ‘til the end of May, when he will then be home at last. That will have been six months away from home!

“Did you get the Vaccine?” This is all everybody talks about these days. I, and many others, are called for Thursday. It is rolling out much faster than I expected. Let us hope it will mean that things might be getting more normal. If life will ever again be normal!  This virus has changed so many things that we took for granted, but the greatest trial for our family was Jim ending up in hospital and visits so restricted. It is hard to have a conversation with masks and gowns and screens between visitor and patient. It has to leave its mark on the patient who feels alienated and cut off from family. I feel so sorry for older people in nursing homes who must have felt truly abandoned by family.

But life continues on, thankfully, and the turf machines are out and work is getting done.

Kathleen’s Corner-20/04/2021

By Kathleen Mullane

Bits and Bobs

Sincere congrats and good wishes are extended to Rory Dalton and his partner Holly of Templeathea, on the recent birth of their new baby, a little girl they are naming Luna Gale. We send good wishes also to the delighted grandmother here in Templeathea, Margaret Dalton. Happy Days to all.

The death has occurred in the USA of Dan Lynch, brother of the late Delia Langan, Mick Lynch and Joan Tony O’Connor. Dan had reached the great age of 91 years and passed away following a stroke. Sincere Sympathy to his relatives both in America and here in Athea and beyond. May he rest in peace.

Many parishioners came along to our church on Sunday last to give in their Lenten Trocaire envelopes along with the weekly donation ones and Easter dues. It is imperative that we support these collections despite the church being closed, bills still have to be paid. We are very lucky to have the Webcam which enables many families both at home and abroad to watch the masses and funerals. Incidentally if anyone wishes to give a donation towards the cost of running the webcam which costs a few thousand yearly it would be much appreciated.

The seats at the GAA  pitch are another welcome feature on the walking track and no doubt they will be used for a SIT and CHAT for those who like to do their walk at a slower pace. Hopefully in the not too distant future our pitches will resound to cheers, claps and the sound of footballs being kicked much to the joy of our young and not so young players.

I was just listening today to a discussion on the ELAINE show while I was getting the dinner. The discussion was on IRONING. One lady said she irons everything down to the socks and tea towels etc and washes clothes every day. The other lady said she irons barely anything and spares on the washing unless dirty as wasting water is a wrong thing. Which one are you. One thing that annoys me is some people switch on their TVs first thing in the morning which is fine but they then are left on all day long with no one at all watching them and sometimes both the radio and TV are going together and no listener there.

The bog machines have started again and on walking up near the windmills yesterday it was lovely to see the lines of turf freshly cut all awaiting some sunny days to save it, roll on the summer.

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK:

When you reach the end of your rope, tie a knot in it and hang on.
