WEATHER: “We used to not worry too much about such extreme cold weather in places like Texas, but we probably need to get ready for more in the future,” Le Xie said. With climate change, he said, “We’re going to have more extreme weather conditions throughout the country.”
Here in Ireland weather has turned mild and many shrubs are beginning to sprout. Even a plum tree is flowering.
SALT: Everyone knows that salty foods make you thirsty. But according to new research, when people increase their sodium intake long-term, they actually drink less water. And that’s not the study’s only surprising finding: High sodium levels also increase feelings of hunger, the authors say, which may suggest that high-salt diets contribute to weight gain.
Experts say this counterintuitive discovery—that dietary salt boosts appetite but decreases thirst—upends more than 100 years of conventional scientific wisdom. The findings are published this week as a set of two papers in the Journal of Clinical Investigation.

POPE; “To experience Lent with love means caring for those who suffer or feel abandoned and fearful because of the COVID-19 pandemic. In these days of deep uncertainty about the future, let us keep in mind the Lord’s word to his Servant, ‘Fear not, for I have redeemed you’ (Isaiah 43:1). In our charity, may we speak words of reassurance and help others to realize that God loves them as sons and daughters,” Pope Francis wrote in the message published Feb. 12.
The pope emphasized that even a small amount of almsgiving when offered with “joy and simplicity” can multiply, as did “the loaves blessed, broken and given by Jesus to the disciples to distribute to the crowd.”
“Love is a gift that gives meaning to our lives. It enables us to view those in need as members of our own family, as friends, brothers or sisters. A small amount, if given with love, never ends, but becomes a source of life and happiness,” he said.
We all make many decisions every single day. From little ones like what to eat for breakfast, to big ones like whether to take a new job. Given how regularly we’re deciding, we certainly have a vested interest in getting better at this skill. But how do we do so? How can we get better at making big choices, and spend less time dithering over the insignificant minutiae that often overwhelms our mental bandwidth? And why didn’t anyone teach us how to do this stuff to begin with?
6 Ways to Carry On in Our Current Crisis
COMMENTARY: So many are asking, ‘What do we do now?’ Here is my humble plan.
CROSBIE; I had been puzzling about what Francis might have been doing before his first recorded appearance in Ireland at age 35. It was easy to assume that he participated in Henry VIII’s campaigns in France or Scotland in the early 1840s. But there appears to have been a lull in hostilities between England, Scotland and France from when Francis was in his late teens until about 1542. So opportunities for military service were limited. Except, of course, in Ireland, where Francis’s uncle Thomas was enforcing the dissolution of the monasteries. Is it possible that Francis accompanied his uncle? Onto the scene, now, enter two men of disputed origin, Patrick Crosbie and his son Pierce. Not to be confused with Francis Cosby and his descendants, this family claimed descent from English gentry in the district of Great Crosbie in Lancashire. Most sources, however, suggest they were in fact from the MacCrossan family, hereditory bards to the O’Moores.
They were granted land at Ballyfin in the north of County Laois in return for informing on the activities of the septs. Later they acquired land at Tarbert in County Kerry. It seems they offered to assist with the removal of the septs from Laois, suggesting to the Lord Deputy that the septs be allowed to lease the Crosbies’ Tarbert acres.
