RAILWAY line between Abbeyfeale and Listowel is now being upgraded by crushed limestone, much more of the line could be developed, if local material was used.
In 1865 the Limerick and Kerry Railway was proposed and in the late 1870’s the 43 mile line from Newcastle to Tralee was built. It was opened on 20th December 1880 with intermediate stations at Barnagh, Devon Road, Abbeyfeale, Kilmorna, Listowel, Lixnaw, Abbeydorney and Ardfert.
NATURE: Primrose and the daffodils are thriving and soon we shall have flowers. Elders and sycamore are beginning to come to life again. Land is very wet and still green, and there is no sign of dry period coming, late frost if it comes will burn the soft grass.

O’MALLEY: Centenary of the birth of Donogh O’ Malley was on 18th January, he has received little credit for introducing in 1967 free transport and education, which has benefitted thousands. He died 53 years ago.

GARDEN of EUROPE; is located in the Childers Park, Listowel and contains more than 2,500 trees and shrubs from all European countries. It also contains Ireland’s only public monument to the memory of the millions who died in the Holocaust. In 1946 Lord Listowel granted Gurtinard Wood and a beautiful walk to the people of Listowel for a nominal sum of £5.00. In the late 1960’s Listowel Urban District Council acquired the nearby ‘Cows Lawn’, a 30 acre field on which a number of townspeople had pasture rights, and developed it into one of Ireland’s finest municipal parks. Today, Childers Park contains and 18 hole Pitch and Putt course, a children’s playground, two tennis courts, football pitches and a well-equipped sports complex. All visitors are welcome.
SAVING CHILDREN. Cork woman Mary Elmes is the first Irish person honoured as “Righteous Among Nations” for her work saving Jewish children from the Nazi gas chambers during World War II.
Yad Vashem, Israel’s official memorial to Jewish victims of the Holocaust, bestowed the award earlier this week. Elmes passed away in 2002. Among the children Elmes saved was Ronald Friend, who is now a professor emeritus of psychology at Stony Brook, New York. Only two years old at the time, his father did not survive, but he and his five-year-old brother were rescued by Elmes.
The Irish Times reports that Friend said the award was “a long overdue recognition of Mary Elmes courageous and selfless actions in rescuing me and many other children when conveys were regularly departing to the death camps.”

Monsignor Hugh O’Flaherty must surely be one of the most inspiring figures of World War II. From his privileged position in the Vatican, Monsignor O’Flaherty gave his services and saved 4,000 allied prisoners and Jews from capture by the German SS.
Hugh O’Flaherty, the eldest of four children, was born in Boherbue, Co. Cork.
A keen sportsman, he enjoyed hurling, basketball and handball, and was mad on golf. When he died in 1963, the largest daily paper – ‘The New York Times’ – highlighted his death on page one – The Pimpernel is Dead.
It was hardly surprising that Monsignor O’Flaherty should be thus honoured. With a ransom of $50,000 dollars on his head, he saved the lives of over 4,000 people while working within the Vatican as a notary of the Holy Office.
