Junior A Championship Round 2

Athea 9-23 Hospital Herbertstown 0-05

We will go into the final round with an excellent chance to top the group and theoretically get a more favourable draw for the knockout stages. Newcastle West also won this weekend so the top two teams will play each other for that reward.

Just like last weekend this quickly became a one-sided affair. Early dominance gave us the confidence to pull away before the first water break. Mark Reidy, Darren Murphy, James Ryan, Kevin Murphy, Mark O’Connor and Gerard Ahern did most of the early scoring. This was made possible by the dominance of Mark Reidy and Jonathan Fitzgerald in midfield who were ably supported by the halfback line. Dylan Griffin and Jack O’Connor in particular, handled a lot of ball and set up continuous attacks. From here the half forward line of Gerard Ahern in centre forward and Brian O’Connor and Darren Murphy on either side were composed in possession. Their job was made easy by the excellent running of James Ryan, Mark O’ Connor and Kevin Murphy. James Ryan and Darren Murphy ended up with three goals each, all well taken, especially Darren’s second. Mark O’Connor was proving impossible to mark so our midfield could mix it up and kick ball straight into him when needed.

As the game wore on, we had the opportunity to make changes with many players getting in on the act. What was most impressive was the intensity the team kept up throughout (both teams in fact). Eamon had clear instructions given for all passages of play and despite the score line this never changed. This is the first game played since the new restrictions on supporters. It is a pity that so few will have witnessed one of our best days in terms of scoring.

Team: Kieran Hartnett, Padraig Reidy (0-01), Martin Chawke, Tommy Quaid (C), Dylan Griffin, Michael Reidy, Jack O’ Connor (1-00), Mark Reidy (0-04), Jonathan Fitzgerald (0-01), Brian O’Connor (1-02), Gerard Ahern (0-04), Darren Murphy (3-00), Kevin Murphy (1-04), Mark O’Connor (0-04), James Ryan (3-02)

Subs used: Jason Kelly, Sean Ryan (0-01), Andy Ahern, David O’Connor, Micheal Dalton.
