Daily Masses from Moyvane Church – side door open and can be heard in your car in the car park. All Churches in the Diocese of Kerry have reopened for private prayer. Many of us remember stories of our ancestors, how they attended mass rocks to evade the authorities.
CONGRATULATIONS to Nora Lynch nee Flaherty of Glasha, Athea on her 100th birthday. Her three children will not be able to be with her to celebrate her birthday, due to restrictions at present. Nora is daughter of Tim Flaherty and Hannie Connor of Knockanure. Only one of her siblings Patrick is still alive. Her husband Jack died some years ago, Nora still keeps abreast of all the news in the local papers.
A BIG SHOUT OUT: To Paul and Gerry and the Knockanure Community Centre who continue to provide beautiful meals each day (Mon-Fri) for us and thanks to those who deliver them. Thank you also to Marie and Mary who provide some meals on Saturdays and Sundays. Well done to all.
OPEN: Kerry County Council has advised that from next Monday, June 8th, all civic amenity sites around the county will fully reopen for business.
CORPUS Christi walk was usually held on June 14th, hundreds always joined in, other events cancelled include Adventure Race Dingle, Spraoi Killarney and 10k run Ballyheigue. The Cahirmee Horse fair on July 12th is also cancelled.
CLOTHES BANK: the clothes bank in the Moyvane Church car park where the contents go to the SVP in the county.
BAPTISMS: no clear guidelines as to when Baptisms will commence again.
DEATH has occurred recently in Kilburn, of Mary Shine, wife of the late Dan Shine, native of Moyvane.
DEATH of Willie Pearse, Woodgrove, Moyvane and formally of Willesden, London and Newquay, Co. Clare, on the 31st May, 2020. Survived by his wife Hannah (nee Dore), sons Liam – Mayo, Michael – London and daughter Linda – London, grandchildren, Conor, Shauna, Kayla – Mayo, Sean, Claire, Owen, Jamie, Andrew and Aaron – London, sisters Myra Chapman and Anne Connell, daughters in law Marie and Karen, son in law Dave, nieces, and nephews.
DEATH of Pat Joe McEnery, Tubbertureen, Moyvane, on the 31st May, 2020. Predeceased by his brothers Johnny and Denis. Sadly missed by his wife Joan, sister Mary, nephew Eoghan, nieces Martha, Edel and Muireann, brothers-in-law Tom, Jim and Dominic, sisters-in-law Helen and Margaret, and extended family. Remembered by his friends, First seen at midfield for Kilbaha school in the Parish league; a powerful Moyvane warrior together with late brother Johnny; Pat Joe. A tower of strength and a gentleman on and off the football pitch and always a pleasure to meet on big match days in Dublin; He was a great character and part and parcel of Moyvane GAA over many years. It is hard to believe that both he and his brother Johnny who were towers of strength at the centre of Moyvane defence have gone to their eternal reward. We ploughed the furrow for many years together in Moyvane GAA.
DEATH took place on 31st May 2020 of Jack Higgins, Ballingarry, and Athea, in his 93rd year. Predeceased by his wife Mary neé (Gregg). He was father of Maurice, James, John and Marie, grandfather of Eve, Cian and Clodagh, father-in-law of Anne and Ita. Also survived by brothers Willie, Pa and Jim, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, and nephews.

OUR SACRED HEART NOVENA BEGINS NEXT THURSDAY 11th, (note from Fr. Kevin)
Please note that there will be two boxes in the car park Moyvane (next to Easter Water point) for Novena Intentions – one for intentions that can be prayed for publically (not including names) and the other strictly private which will be at the Altar for each evening Mass. Be assured that (Fr. Kevin)I am the only one that has access to these intentions. Each evening after Mass both these boxes will be kept at my prayer space in the Presbytery.
Novena prayer leaflets can be picked up at Holly’s, Noel’s and at the porch Masses in preparation for Thursday. May the Sacred Heart of Jesus be everywhere loved forever.
The Sacred Heart Novena consists of nine days of praying the Novena prayer and attending Eucharist. These Masses will be celebrated at the porch door in Moyvane Church from 11th to the 19th. Our YouTube Mass on the 14th is a Novena Mass. For those of you who are unable to attend the following is the Novena prayer.

FUNERALS from Fr. Kevin: Very many thanks to grieving families who have been so helpful to me in celebrating Mass for their loved ones. I appreciate too that the guards of honour from the Church gate to Brosnan’s Corner are proving supportive to families. I still encourage you not to congregate in the car park but to keep social distancing in mind while in the guard of honour (2meters). With regards to Parish Radio Link, these Masses are going out, but as we are not allowed to share microphones, readings and eulogies cannot be heard on Parish Radio Link, only to those present in the Church.

FARMERS have been under many pressures since the lockdown and nobody seen to appreciate the plight of many of them. Who knows what will happen between now and the coming of the Cuckoo next year, as he will be shortly leaving us. The birds are still singing early in the morning. We still appreciate the fine weather and the recent rain, will improve growth. With the country opening up the principal thing is not the distance, but how you act after leaving your car. The safest way is have your own food and drink, and use only recently cooked food. Outdoor music sessions and events could also be managed. As toilets are closed, people have to be prepared, not enough warning is being provided in the media about it.

MACADAM surface is to be placed on the 40km Southern Greenway route, hopefully in time the Kerry section will get the same treatment, which would be a safe haven for locals and visitors.
ST PIO: The final Padre Pio Devotion for this season was held in Castleisland Church on Tuesday, June 2nd, they will return again on Sept. 1st.
LIFEGUARDS are on duty at Glin Pier on Saturdays & Sundays for the month of June 2020. Depending on the time of high tides each day, the lifeguards are on duty for a number of hours before and/or after high tide.
LIVES June 2020: Mask-clad protesters gathered in Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, and smaller cities and towns across the country, drawing attention to racial profiling, police brutality and the more than 400 Indigenous people who have died in police custody since a royal commission into the problem was held in 1991.

ARDFERT Retreat Centre;
Due to Covid-19 and as a result of social distancing and other necessary Public health requirements the Diocese will not be running any programmes in Ardfert Retreat Centre for the foreseeable future. In March the HSE looked at the Retreat Centre as a possibility if they needed extra bed capacity. Thank God they did not.
In mid-May the Diocese was approached by Talbot Grove, Castleisland asking if the Diocese would consider entering into a letting agreement of the Retreat Centre. Due to social distancing requirements Talbot Grove has seen a significant reduction in its capacity to run its residential programmes and is looking for additional capacity to meet its needs. The Diocese is looking at the possibility of entering into a short term letting arrangement with Talbot Grove for a term of one year commencing on July 1st next.

Medieval Church of Knockanure
IT WAS sometime before the Norman Invasion 1169 A.D. that the Irish Church was re-organised and among the large number of parishes established, in the diocese of Ardfert (now Kerry) was Knockanure. In those times it was spelt In Irish “Cnoc an, Iubhair” — the Hill of the Yew Tree. It included the Islandanny area as far as Purt. According to Barrington in his book ”Discovering Kerry” Churches of this type seen in the old Knockanure graveyard were built mostly in the period 1350—1500. Traditionally it is believed that bullocks’ blood is used, in the mixing of mortar. Fr. Gaughan states that the Priests were appointed from Rattoo Abbey near Ballyduff. They were Augustinian Friars.
In his research he has come across three Friars who were appointed to Knockanure — Fr. Cormac O’Connor 1434, Fr. Kennelly and, Fr. Scanlon About 1580 trouble started for the Church in North Kerry. The Earl of Desmond with his allies, O’Connor of Carrigafoyle and Fitzmaurice of Lixnaw, rebelled against Queen Elizabeth I. The Irish were defeated and their castles taken. Rattoo Abbey was burnt and the Priests, dispersed, — many were killed.
It is probable that from, this time Knockanure fell into disuse and gradually became a ruin. The Churchyard high up on the green hill Inspired the local poet Paddy Drury to compose the following verse: Knockanure churchyard, May The Heavens well bless you, That lovely spot where the Dead do resort If you stand by its wall on A clear summer day You can see the ships sailing From many a port You can see Tarbert Isle and The hills back in Kerry The tide of Saleen as it rises and folk If you travel the nation for a burial plantation Sure Knockanure church is the pride of them all.

The Black Nurse Who Drove Integration of the U.S. Nurse Corps
In World War II, Mabel Keaton Staupers tirelessly fought for the integration of the Army and Navy Nurse Corps—and eventually won.

Three years later, in 1948, the ANA also integrated. Staupers became president of the NACGN in 1949. And after the two major victories, in the Armed Forces Nurse Corps and the ANA, she led NACGN in its voluntary dissolution, believing that it had fulfilled its objectives. Even though she recognized there was still much work to be done for true equality, “[t]he doors have been opened and [the black nurse] has been given a seat in the top councils,” she wrote upon NACGN’s dissolution. “The progress of active integration has been well started.”
For her work toward racial justice in the nursing profession, Staupers was awarded the Mary Mahoney Medal, named after the first black nurse to earn a degree in the U.S., by the NACGN for distinguished service in 1947. This was followed by the Spingarn Medal, the highest honor awarded by the NAACP, in 1951, for “spearheading the successful movement to integrate Negro nurses into American life as equals.”

On Sunday, Baron Deasy and Mr. Justice O’Hagan, taking advantage of the repeal last session of the enactment preventing Catholic officials from carrying the insignia of their office into Catholic chapels, attended High Mass in the Limerick Catholic cathedral, the Judges wore their judicial costume, and the Catholic members of the corporation attended with them officially. The building was crowded, and the Catholic members of the Bar were present. The bishop, Dr. Butler, officiated.
