WEATHER is wonderful since the restrictions were imposed, pity, people are being prevented in
partaking in many outdoor activities, the rules were designed by university professors who have
little concept of the feelings of the ordinary Joe Soap. The Southern Trail is now open. Plants need
watering daily and farmers will soon experience drought conditions.

DEATH has taken place of Patrick Enright of Ashgrove Meadows, Ballina, Co. Tipperary and formerly
of Tubbertureen, Moyvane. Patrick passed away on Thursday, May 21st, 2020. Husband of Anne and
Dad to Ciaran and Cora, granddad to Cian, Caoimhe and Cillian. Also survived by grandchildren,
daughter-in-law Yvonne, brothers Denis and Joe sisters Margaret and Mary, brother-in-law, sister-in-
law, nieces, nephews.
DEATH of Mike Joe Cronin, Mail Road Cross, Moyvane, on the 26th May, 2020, at University Hospital,
Kerry. Sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his wife Eileen, daughter Aine and her partner Joe,
sister Noreen in UK, nephew Tim, grandnephew, and grandniece.
DEATH of Bibi Dillon (nee Enright) of Leitrim East, Moyvane, and formerly of Ballyhahill, on May
25th 2020. Wife of Patrick (Dromerin) and devoted mother of Adam, Patrick and Ava. Sadly missed
by her loving family, relatives, neighbours and dear friends.
DEATH has occurred recently of Kathleen Culhane (wife of Paud Culhane) Leitrim Middle &
Birmingham.
DEATH aged 81 of Brendan Boyer at Las Vegas on May 28, 2020. Survived by his wife of 53 years,
Stella, his three children, Brendan Jr., Aisling, Clodagh, and his two grandchildren, Liam & Nora
Stella. Hundreds recall his visits to Ballybunion and other local venues.
It is reported that during the show band era there were about 700 bands involved.

FR. BRENDAN O’CALLAGHAN (Taken from Moyvane Knockanure parish Newsletter)
This coming Friday, June 5th, Knockanure native Fr. Brendan celebrates 60 years of Priesthood. Born
on 16th September, 1936, Fr. Brendan, is a man of great passion, humanity and vitality. His many
activities over the years aptly demonstrate this in what has been a beautiful Priesthood. However, if
one examines these, one cannot help but notice that they are all still driven by one underlying
passion – the tremendous desire to spread the Good News in building up the Kingdom of God.
Limited as we are in these times with all special celebrations I will celebrate the porch Mass from
Moyvane Church on Anniversary day June 5th at 7.30pm. Fr. Brendan will be in his ‘famous blue car’
and his great pal also Knockanure native Fr. Tom McMahon, will be present in his own car too.
Family were and still are so important to Fr. Brendan. He is the last of his family, all others have
gone before him marked with the sign of faith. In his own words he gives us a glimpse of his parents
and family, how his vocation started Fr. Brendan as a Priest’s and where it took him to. Fr.
Brendan shares the following: “I owe everything to a loving family who had a great sense of parish
and community. My father Pádraig RIP (from Dingle) came to Knockanure as head teacher and
married local girl Bessie Cronin RIP. My brothers Austin (RIP, January 1982) died while serving as a
curate in the Parish of Lixnaw, Tony (RIP, September 2006) taught in Moyvane before being moved
to Listowel. My sister Mairead (RIP, January 2014) taught in Knockanure before she moved to
Clarinbridge, Galway. I was ordained on 5th June, 1960 and retired in 2003. I remember vividly Fr.
James Leahy (RIP), first of many priests from Knockanure school challenged me (at half time of a
football match in Listowel sports field) “Brendan we need priests in Nottingham”. There began the
journey we are celebrating, joining with neighbour and fellow parishioner Fr. Tom McMahon serving
in the Nottingham Diocese. By the 29th June that year, I was at St. Peter’s, Leicester, hence my
loyalty to ‘The Blues’ Leicester City Football Club and Leicester Tigers Rugby Club”. We all wish Fr.
Brendan continued good health and blessings, ad multos annos.
TOGETHER WE CAN……… (From Parish Newsletter)
Since mid-March, I have, to the best of my ability, tried to maintain spiritual and pastoral support for
all in the Parish and beyond. As we head to July 20th, the Parish Pastoral Council and myself will
need a support team of parishioners (ideally with suitable expertise …….medical, health & safety,
project management, crowd control etc) who would help us implement Diocesan guidelines. We
need generous parishioners who have personal skills to serve as stewards and who are willing to
supervise the sanitizing of seating areas etc to the required standard. A whole parish effort could
have the benefit of making it successful and easy to adapt to the new norm. While we enter a new
era, it might be more effective in terms of facilitating numbers and maintaining hygiene to celebrate
Mass initially in Moyvane Church. Depending on how we progress there then we can judge how safe
it would be to take it to Knockanure. Outdoor Liturgical celebrations may be contemplated subject
to adjustment in Government restrictions. Delightful news that Holy Communion will be distributed
and I am delighted that the perspex frames that I had made last week complies with the distribution
of Holy Communion – with an opening at hand level. I would urge any parishioners who can help

nearest Pastoral Council member who are as follows: Michelle Mulvihill, Mary O’Flaherty, Elizabeth
Brosnan, Mary Fitzgerald, Margaret Horgan, P.J. Mulvihill, Joanne O’Connor, Kay O’Hanlon and
Eileen Roche. Depending on the plans we put in place will determine how we move forward. So
let’s engage and prepare for the 20th. We can do it – and if we do the Parish will continue to be a
delight and inspiration to its parishioners who deserve the best. May God bless, protect and
motivate all of us in helping and looking out for each other. Stay safe, strong and well.

CULTURE Night has grown from a relatively small-scale cultural event, staged only in Dublin in 2006,
to the significant national cultural event it is now, with some 400,000 people visiting museums,

EVENTS: Sad that the 2020 Limerick Fleadh in Athea was concealed, it would have been Athea’s
tenth occasion hosting the Limerick Fleadh Cheoil, having hosted the event in 1975, 1976, 1983,
1984, 1991, 1992, 2001, 2002 and 2019.
Monday, 25th May, the second anniversary of the lifting of the 8th amendment that allowed
abortion in Ireland. Writers Week and Queen of the May event in Knockanure also cancelled.
Every year on the weekend of Pentecost Sunday the Chartres Pilgrimage takes place in France, with
pilgrims marching from Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris to the Cathedral of Chartres, over sixty miles
away. Last year fourteen-thousand pilgrims came from all over the world to take part. This year
because of the epidemic the pilgrimage had to be cancelled.

(JTA) — Sweden’s only Jewish overnight camp has reversed its decision to close this summer.
Camp in Maine; Modin’s list of measures include holding campwide gatherings in large open areas,
where groups of campers can socially distance; serving meals table by table rather than having
campers line up at a buffet; using only disposable plates and silverware; and closing communal
bathrooms. Staff will be tested before they arrive and will be at camp “well in advance of the
campers,” according to the email to parents.
GRAND PARENTS: “Children are practically not infected and do not pass on the virus. And most
children are infected by their parents. That is why small children pose no risk to high-risk patients or
grandparents. So, it is legitimate that grandparents have physical contact with younger children. If
the children get older, for example, from the age of 10, the risk increases, then this contact is no
longer desirable,” Dr. Koch, head of the infectious diseases unit at the Federal Department of Public
Health (FOPH), said.

VIRUS Panic Means More Virus Deaths
It isn’t overconfidence that’s killing Americans, as The Atlantic charged in its story about a red state
re-opening: “Georgia’s Experiment in Human Sacrifice.” No, the panic is what’s killing the thousands
of elderly Americans trapped in nursing homes, without visitors, clergy, or even Last Rites at their
lonely deaths. Because according to the Courier Times, what drove blue state governors to dump
virus patients at nursing homes was fear.
Akron, OH – To help alleviate the pressures America’s food banks are facing to supply meals to
communities impacted by COVID-19, Roll by Goodyear, a tire buying and installation provider in the
greater Philadelphia and Washington, D.C., markets, will donate the cost equivalency of 100 meals
to Feeding America for every tire sold.
BIRTHDAY: people who have reached their 100th birthday receive a gift from the State of €2,540 and
a special message from the President of Ireland. Last year there were 417 100th birthdays of whom

MARS: As part of NASA’s Mars Exploration Program, the Mars July 2020 rover, named Perseverance,
will explore the Martian surface and seek to answer questions about the potential of ancient life on
Mars. The rover will also gather information and test new technology that will help address the
challenges of future human missions to Mars.
SPACEX is scheduled in June to launch the 8th mission of the constellation of networked satellites
known as Starlink. The goal of Starlink is to create a network that will help provide internet services

FORGER FREE FOR NURSING FLU VICTIMS

WATERTOWN, Nov. 6. His heroic work during the Spanish influenza epidemic which is raging here
has saved Charles W. Tallman, a Cleveland, Ohio, nurse, from serving a forgery term in the Jefferson
county jail. Tallman was arrested and indicted on the charge of forgery by drawing a check here on
the Cleveland City Trust Co. of Cleveland. He passed the bogus paper on W. B. Reed, proprietor of
the City hotel here, and the paper came back marked “N. G.” Tallm. in pleaded guilty to the charge,
declaring he was intoxicated at the time. Praise for the prisoner from District Attorney Jerome B.
Cooper and Sheriff Michael Gleason resulted in a suspended sentence being imposed by Judge
George W, Reeve. They told the court that Tallman, a trained nurse, took charge of the Influenza
epidemic here when it was impossible to secure physicians and that he worked day and night among
the victims, declining to leave his patients until the crisis was over, although he risked his own health
and life by so doing.

WHAT TO DO FOR THE “FLU" State Board of Health Says Epidemic Will Last Another Month; It Came
From Persons Afflicted Taken From Train at Railroad Gateways; How to Avoid Contagion, How to
Care For Those Who Have It; How to Recognize Disease in Yourself.
Nearly a third of all the cases of Spanish influenza in California are in , San Francisco, Oakland and
Los Angeles, these cities having a combined population equal to almost one-half of the population
of the entire state. The flu first appeared in California in some of the railroad centres close to the
railroad gateways at the state border. In almost every case the disease was traced at these points to
persons who were sick with influenza and were taken off the trains in these towns where so many
cases were later reported. State Board of Health says the epidemic will continue for at least a
month. The closing of the public schools is a measure that the State Board of Health does not favour,
provided that the pupils are inspected daily by teacher or nurse, those who show signs of illness
being immediately sent home. The State Board of Health has not issued any general order or made
any drastic moves in prohibiting public meetings or In closing places of amusement. The board
believes that it is much better to supply citizens with full information as to the ways in which the
disease may be contracted and in the best method of avoiding the disease. To avoid influenza, the
State Board of Health advises workers to walk to work, if possible; avoid the person who coughs or
sneezes; wash your hands before eating; make full use of all available sunshine. Do not use a
common drinking cup or a common towel, they both spread disease. Should you cough or sneeze,
cover your nose and mouth with a handkerchief. Keep out of crowded places; walk in the open air
rather than go to crowded places of amusement. Keep away from houses where there are cases of
influenza. If sick no matter how slightly, see a physician. If you had influenza, stay in bed until your
doctor says you can safely get up. Sleep is necessary for wellbeing. Avoid over-exertion. Eat good
clean food. To householders- The board advises keeping out of the sick room unless attendance Is
necessary. Do not handle articles coming from the sick room until they are boiled. Allow no visitors,
and do not go visiting. Call a doctor for all inmates who show signs of beginning sickness. The usual
symptoms are: Inflamed and watery eyes, discharging nose, backache, headache, muscular pain, and
fever. Keep away from crowded places, such as “movies,” theatres, street cars. See to it that your
children are kept warm and dry, both night and day. Have sufficient fire in your home to disperse the
dampness. Open your windows at night. If cool weather prevails, add extra bed clothing. If you feel a
sudden chill, followed by muscular pain, head-ache, backache, unusual tiredness and fever, go to
bed at once. See that there is enough bed clothing to keep you warm. Open all windows in your
bedroom and keep them open at all times, except in rainy weather. Take medicine to open the
bowels freely. Take some nourishing food such as milk, egg-and-milk or broth every four hours. Stay
in bed until a physician tells you that it is safe to get up.

RIVERSIDE’S METHODS OE COMBATING THE FLU APPROVED BY BEST AUTHORITY Dr. H. R. Martin Is
Home from Chicago Where Spanish Influenza Was Discussed in American Health Convention—Mask
and Quarantine Approved.
When the Riverside board of health introduced the mask, closed its doors against assemblies and
established the quarantine in its combat with Spanish influenza, it adopted the most approved
methods in the battle against the epidemic. Only in one place did the board fail and that was in
nurse supervision of the schools. This however, was no fault of the board of health, which matter
being up to the board of education.
Dr. H. R. Martin is home from the American Health convention in Chicago and he is responsible for
the statement made above, basing his claims on the papers and discussions of influenza, and the
most effective manner in combating it.
