Athea GAA

U14 Football:

The U14s put in a big effort last Sunday morning in Athea in a challenge match against a strong Moyvane team. They lost 8-7 to 4-6, but showed plenty of character throughout. Team – Tomás Ahern, Jack Sexton, Ciarán Hunt, Jamie Collins, Tadhg Ahern, Sean Twomey, Evan Curry, James Hunt, Louis O Sullivan, Rory Cleary, Timmy O’Keeffe, Alex Quinn, Michael Kelly, Jim Ahern and Peter Coolahan.

County Panel:

Well done to Evan Curry and Calum Buckley who have made the county u14 football panel, and James Hunt who is on the extended panel, a great honour for 3 fine footballers.

Post primary Schools:

Well done to Michael Tierney and his team mates on Coláiste Ide agus Iosef Abbeyfeale senior football team who won the Munster Colleges C final last week, unfortunately they lost the All Ireland Semi final on Saturday to Freshford from Mayo.

U161/2:

Two weeks ago Tarbert Comp met Coláiste Ide agus Iosef in the Munster u161/2  championship, and after an excellent game which went to extra time, the Abbeyfeale school won by a point. Andrew O Riordan, Daire O Shea and Conor Mullane were on the Tarbert panel, while T. J. Hunt was on the Abbeyfeale panel. Its great to see our Athea footballers playing for their respective schools, keep it up boys.

County Championship 2nd Round Verses Pallasgreen:

We got our year started at the second time of asking after last week’s first round cancellation against Glin on Saturday last. This was Eamon McElligott’s first game in charge and our first game since 1997 as a Junior club. With Mike Ahern and Roger Ryan as selectors the management team weren’t afraid to give youth a chance. David and Jack O’ Connor both started, as did Brian O’ Connor and William Sexton, all joining some more senior players. In terrible conditions we trailed by 8 points to 4 at halftime.  Jack O’ Connor, Mark O Connor and Shane Mulvihill (welcome back from a long injury layoff) got our points. Shane had a great game adding four more points in the second half. William Sexton and Mark Reidy also scored from Play. The game finished 1-11 to 0-10, with visitors Pallasgreen coming out on top. There were many positives however with many players getting a run out and all subs performing well when introduced, notably Aidan Curry who made his debut at this level. Timmy Enright also had a great game in goal.

Team: Timmy Enright, Shane Tierney, Tommy Quaid, Matthew Tierney, David O’ Connor (Conor Mullane), Mike Reidy, Padraig Reidy, Alan Kelly, Mark Reidy, Brian O’ Connor (Aidan Curry), Shane Mulvihill, Jack )’ Connor, Gerard Ahern, Mark O’ Connor (Darren Murphy) and William Sexton (Gerard Collins).

Scorers. Jack O’ Connor, Mark Reidy, William Sexton and Mark Reidy all 0-01, Shane Mulvihill 0-06 (4 frees).

Public Lighting:

We are delighted to hear that at the recent NCW area Council Meeting, Councillor Francis Foley has allocated €4,700 of GMA Funding towards the provision of Public Lighting to illuminate the footpath from the Graveyard to the GAA Pitch. This will make the walk from the village to our grounds safer for all.

Registration:

All players should have received the link to register for the club on line for 2020, please do so ASAP by logging onto the Club Force App.
