Firstly, a ‘Huge Congratulations’ to the Athea Vixens Basketball teams who, on Saturday last, travelled to Tralee to play in the KABB finals. The 1st to play were the U/14 girls who won 48-43 against Kenmare. Next up were the U/14 boys at 1pm who had another great game against Rathmore winning 50-20. And lastly were the U/16 girls who took on Rathmore – this game was so tough and went down to the line. Unfortunately in the final seconds they lost by just 2pts – (1 basket). Well done to each and every one of them and of course to Trish, their trainer.

Sincere sympathy is extended to the Larkin family of Clash on the recent death of Jim and so soon after the death of his daughter-in-law Mary. Jim was a member of the farming community and respected by all who knew him. Many came to pay their respects at Kelly’s funeral parlour on Monday evening last. Burial followed requiem mass on Tuesday to Holy Cross cemetery. Sincere sympathy goes to his son Liam, daughters, relatives and many friends. ‘May the light of heaven be his’.

Best wishes are extended to Nicola Scanlon (daughter of Geraldine and Connie, Templeathea) who celebrated her 18th birthday along with her family and friends on Saturday night last. All had a very enjoyable night.

The death also took place last week of Sheila Kelly (nee O’Connor of Knocknagorna, Athea). Her remains reposed at Cross’ funeral home in Limerick on Thursday evening last. Many Athea neighbours and friends travelled to pay their respects to her family, brothers and sisters and friends. Requiem mass on Friday at Our Lady Queen of Peace church in Janesboro was followed by cremation in Shannon Crematorium. ‘May she rest in peace’.

Well Athea Drama Group have just completed yet another 6 night successful run of their production “Looking for Love”, which had good laughs throughout. Over the years the group have supported many charitable and other organisations and also have given nights in the kitchen to various groups who need to do fundraising e.g. Basketball, Coiste, Ladies football etc. On behalf of the Lourdes fundraising committee I would like to thank the group for allowing us to fund-raise to send invalids and youth-helpers to Lourdes in June – it’s very much appreciated and to all who supported the cause.
