Athea GAA

Club Draw:

The next Club Draw will take place on this Saturday night at Collins’ Bar. If you still want to join in for this and the remaining draws, you can do so at €10 for each draw. The best of luck to all.

U-21s:

The next game for our U-21s will be on this Saturday against Clann na nGael at a time and venue to be decided, so keep an eye and ear out for it. The last game our U-21s played against Foynes in Glin was a great game for Athea, so hopefully this time around it will be the same. Your support would be greatly appreciated.

Nationwide:

Didn’t our Páirc na nGael pitch look fabulous on Friday night last on Nationwide, especially the overhead view showing the pitch at it’s very best and the walking/running track. In the very near future the lights will be all up and ready for the winter months when it will be great that both young and old will be safe while walking and running during the darker winter months. It was also brilliant to see the newly formed hurling club taking to the pitch and by all accounts they are greatly improving. Good wishes go to Jacqueline O’Connor and hopefully she will have a speedy recovery.

U13 Football

Athea 1-7 Monagea 0-11

We played Monagea away on Monday October 7th in dry but windy conditions. We were against the wind in the first half and trailed 0-6 to 0-0 despite having plenty of possession. They scored the first two points of the second half and it looked bad for us but we upped our game and great defending from Jamie Collins and Ciaran Hunt led to scores by Calum Buckley, James Hunt and Rory Cleary followed by a goal from Jim Ahern, which gave us a one point lead. We let them back into the game and they scored the final two points to win by one. Overall though a very encouraging display. Team, Tomas Ahern, Louis O Sullivan, Ciaran Hunt, Jamie Collins, Calum Buckley, Tadhg Ahern, Evan Curry, James Hunt, Sean Twomey, Rory Cleary, Alex Quinn, Timmy O Keeffe, Peter Coolahan, Jack Sexton, Tomas Ahern and Jim Ahern. We got a walkover from Dromin/Athlacca/Banogue on Monday evening last.

Parish League.

In round 2 of the U13 parish league Dublin who lost to Kerry in round one, defeated Limerick in a very high scoring game at the high field on Monday last. The game finished 3-17 to 3-10, with a welcome exhibition of point scoring from both sides. Dublin dominated most of the game and seemed to benefit, from already having a game played, Limerick will probably be better the next day out, when they play Kerry in round 3.

School team

The local national school team played Kilcornan on Wednesday last in Kilcornan and came out the wrong side in an excellent game of football. The game finished on a score line Athea 4-9 to Kilcornan 6-6. They are still qualified for the semi final where they will again be away. Team, Sean Twomey, Tomas Ahern, Eric Barrett, Peter Coolahan, Jamie O Mahony, Louis O Sullivan, Jamie Collins, Tom Ahern, Jack Sexton, Jim Ahern, Alex Quinn, Jamie Quinn, and Michael Kelly.

Hurling

Next Sunday is the final coaching for this year at 11.30 am, there will be treats afterwards in the hall for the kids and tea and coffee for the parents. Parents are asked to bring a few buns, cakes or sandwiches for the party.

Field

We are very fortunate with our state of the art playing field, which is in perfect playing condition despite all the rain. Even at this time of year between ladies football, underage football and Hurling and U21 football it is a hive of activity most evenings and Sundays
