Billy Collins Cup:

On Saturday last –  which thankfully turned out to be a nice day in the afternoon, after a very wet morning – the match between  great hurling teams Kilmoyley of Kerry and Cappawhite of Tipperary took place here in Páirc na nGael – both teams vying for the lovely cup that Billy Collins had so generously sponsored. Billy, in his nineties, was instrumental in forming a hurling club in Chicago many years ago and had many connection with both Kilmoyley and Cappawhite. A great crowd turned out to watch the game which was played at a fast pace – it was great to see a Hurling Match being played on the pitch – especially as we now have a newly formed  club with our young players improving greatly. Incidentally, Tommy O’Mahony was home from England at the game – Tommy was also instrumental in getting the hurling club off the ground. Kilmoyley were winners on the day by a few points and were presented with the cup by Billy. Also a hurley was presented to both teams inscribed by Mary Teresa Hurley as a memento of their Athea visit. Thanks to the Ronald McDonald committee for the their teas and eats at the Clubhouse at the match. Both teams were treated to soup and sandwiches at the Top of the Town afterwards. Well done to all who made it a wonderful day.

U13 Football:

Athea 1-7 Monagae 0-11

We played Monagea away on Monday evening last, in dry but windy conditions. we were against the wind in the first half  and trailed 0-6 to 0-0 despite having plenty of possession. They scored the first two points of the second half and it looked bad for us but we upped our game and great defending from Jamie Collins and Ciaran Hunt, led to scores by Calum Buckley, James Hunt and Rory Cleary followed by a goal from Jim Ahern, which gave us a one point lead. We let them back into the game and they scored the final two points to win by one. Overall though a very encouraging display. Team: Tomas Ahern, Louis O’Sullivan, Ciaran Hunt, Jamie Collins, Calum Buckley, Tadhg Ahern, Evan Curry, James Hunt, Sean Twomey, Rory Cleary, Alex Quinn, Timmy O’Keeffe, Peter Coolahan, Jack Sexton, Tomas Ahern and Jim Ahern.

We play Mountcollins at home on Wednesday night Oct 9th at 6.30 sharp. players be at the field for 6pm.
