The first half Athea started well and after 15 minutes Rory Cleary put us 1 nil up with a great strike outside the box. But just before the half time whistle came, Kilcolman made it 1 :1 from the penalty spot.
Second half and Rory Cleary scored again to put us 2:1 ahead. Athea pushed on and Callum Buckley made it 3 when his free kick hit the net. After 20 minutes Callum made it 4 1 from the penalty spot and with only 5 minutes to go James Broderick scored to make it 5 1 on the night. It was another great team performance. Athea GAA
Thanks:
Athea GAA Club would sincerely like to thank everyone who gave so willingly to their church-gate collection over the weekend. Despite the very wet night on Saturday, all those going up to mass stopped their cars as well as those on foot and all put “hands in their pockets” to contribute. The money raised will go to further enhancing the pitch facilities. And it will be great in the very near future to be able to go up when it’s dark and to be able to walk/run on the track with the floodlighting.
Hurling:
I’ve also heard the other day that our recently formed “hurling club” is coming on in leaps and bounds – with the young players improving by the training session and isn’t it great to see so much sporting activity going on – considering the huge amount of obesity in young people nowadays. The message is “ get them off the phones and X-boxes and on to the playing field.
U-21s:
Our U-21s lined out against a strong Foynes team in Glin on Sunday evening last in “Round 1” of the West U-21 championship. The majority of our boys were around the 17 age mark, so it was a good experience for Noel Barry, trainer, and the team. They put on a great display and only lost by 3pts in the end (2-5) to (2-8).
Billy Collins Cup
Subject to weather conditions Athea will host a hurling match between Cappawhite and Kilmoyley this Saturday October 5th 2019 at 4pm.
The teams were chosen by our Honorary hurling President Billy Collins and will play for his Cup.
Billy has many friends in both clubs.
This should be a good hurling spectacle and comes at a time when our own club has given the chance this year for many young players to play the small ball game.
The club is very grateful to Billy for his support.
