Some of the large number of musicians and singers who attended the celebration night at the Top of the Town on Friday night last to honour Liam Broderick’s achievement in getting 1st place in 15-18 singing at Fleadh Cheoil ns hÉireann in Drogheda this year. Liam is a member of the very talented Broderick family from Cratloe West who have numerous All-Irelands between them. Congratulations to Liam on his fantastic achievement and let’s hope it is the first of many.

Billy Collins Cup

Subject to weather conditions Athea will host a hurling match between Cappawhite and Kilmoyley this Saturday, October 5th 2019 at 4pm.

The teams were chosen by our Honorary hurling President Billy Collins and will play for his Cup.

Billy has many friends in both clubs. This should be a good hurling spectacle and comes at a time when our own club has given the chance this year for many young players to play the small ball game.

The club is very grateful to Billy for his support.

Athea Parish Journal

We have decided to go ahead with the Journal again this year if we can get enough material in.

We ask all individuals, clubs, community groups etc to please send in material and photographs to us in ample time so that we would be ready to print in early November.

Late copy will not be accepted under any circumstances.

Athea Runs Faster in Stripes Fundraiser

Preparations for our upcoming fundraising weekend in aid of Ronald McDonald House are progressing well. The village is quickly becoming a sea of red and white stripes creating a carnival atmosphere ensuring the events are getting lots of publicity both countywide and nationwide.  As of today (Sunday 29th September), we have reached just over 25% of our fundraising target to raise €10,000. Thank you all for your incredible support to date. Anyone wishing to donate can log onto idonate.ie and search for ‘Athea Runs Faster in Stripes’, call into the Athea Credit Union and donate to account number 3094 or donate on the day of any of the events where donation  buckets will be available.

The coffee morning will kick off at 9.30am on Friday morning, October 4th, at Con Colbert Hall and will continue until 11.30am. A warm cosy atmosphere will greet you all as well as some tasty homemade treats.

Registration will be open from 11am on Sunday morning, October 6th  at Con Colbert Memorial Hall. It is essential that everyone taking part in the 5k walk/run registers and receives a sticker. There will be a prize for the first man and woman home, kindly sponsored by AIB Bank. Judges will also be on the lookout for the best striped man, woman and child. Thanks to Margaret Carroll, Derek Curtin and Upper Cuts Barbers Abbeyfeale for sponsoring these prizes.  Any colour stripes are welcome and the advice from the judges is ‘go all out!’ There will also be a treasure hunt around the route for children where a stamp will need to be collected from ducks at every 1km. The completed treasure hunt sheets must then be presented to ‘The Giant’ to claim your prize! There will also be a water station and music station located around the 5K. Free refreshments will be available at the hall following the fun run.

The route for the 5K is the Slí na Sláinte walk around Fairy Street. In order to ensure safety on the day, there will be NO PARKING on the route. We are advising anyone within reasonable distance to please walk to the hall or car pool together. We will also be operating a free shuttle bus from the Soccer Pitch on the Glin Road from 11am on Sunday morning for anyone wishing to park here, kindly sponsored by Mullane Coach Hire. There will be parking available on the Abbeyfeale, Listowel and Moyvane Roads and limited parking in the village. Traffic stewards will be based at each entry to the village to guide you. Your cooperation is appreciated. We are also encouraging home owners to open up their gates to allow cars to park in their driveways. Please get in touch with any member of the organising committee if you have a space to offer.

As the ‘number of sleeps’ leading up to the event lessens, our catchphrase ‘Athea runs faster in Stripes’ is indeed set to become true. Another phrase, ‘Athea runs faster together’ could similarly be adopted going forward in the future. With buy in & support from the community much can be achieved together. Wishing everyone an enjoyable and fun filled weekend. #athearunsfasterinstripes.
