Athea GAA

Semi-Final:

The West Intermediate semi-final against Castlemahon took place on Sunday last in Tournafulla. Brothers Jack and David O’Connor made their ‘debut’ on the day with Jack scoring a goal and David a point – well done to the twin brothers. Athea unfortunately didn’t have a win on this occasion and the final scoreline read (5-6) to (2-10). Hopefully with the younger players coming on board and doing their bit – they will get more favourable results. We live in hope.

The Club wish the very best to Jonathan Fitzgerald and Kieran Hartnett who have gone to Australia and will be missed from the club.

Billy Collins Cup:

The ‘Billy Collins Cup’ match which will be a once off game at the end of the month, which very nicely was presented by Billy to the newly-formed hurling club and will be much looked forward to, it is hoped will be played between 2 prominent teams – more news shortly.

U-21s:

The U-21s championship will be starting up shortly and hopefully they will leave ‘a mark on their games’ and do well.

Club Draw:

The next Club draw will be in about 2 weeks times, this will be the half-way mark and if you still want to join you can at €10 a draw.

U-12 Football:

A very good performances by all players and replacements but unfortunately we came up short at the very end. After an impressive 1st half effort Athea led by one point at the break. With the lead changing hands a few times in the 2nd half, it built up for an exciting and nervous finish. At the end of a hard fought contest Caherconlish managed to pip us in the end winning by a single score. It was disappointing not to reach the final but with the same determination and effort we can definitely achieve a 3rd place finish at the finals weekend (20th/23rd) Sept. Well done to the whole panel of players.

UNDERAGE FOOTBALL:

Athea 0-9 Kildimo Pallaskenry 3-9

Our gallant U16s were beaten by a very strong Kildimo/Pallaskenry team on Monday night last before a huge crowd of supporters. Our boys played fantastic football in the first half against the wind but still trailed 0-6 to 0-4 at half time. The power and strength of the opposition came to the fore in the second half. They got an early goal and it was an uphill struggle for us after that. The Athea boys never stopped trying, giving their all to make their loyal supporters proud of them. There was huge disappointment after the game, but the team can hold their head high after a great year. Well done to the management team of Padraic Walsh, Jason Dalton and James O’Connor for all their work during the year.
