Intermediates:
The relegation match between Athea and Glin, which was to have been played in Abbeyfeale on Saturday evening last, was changed to Mick Neville Park in Rathkeale on the day and incidentally the weather wasn’t very amicable either. This was a very important game between the two neighbouring teams – resulting in relegation for the losers which, unfortunately, on this occasion was our Athea boys. And losing by just “1 point” made it all the more difficult to take. However “heart must not be lost” – all it means is that “the ladder will have to be climbed again” and hopefully they will get to the top rung in the not too distant future.
Nationwide:
It was so good to see Páirc na nGael ‘the hive of activity’ during the filming by Nationwide recently. All the underage boys and girls were playing their utmost for the cameras – hurleys and sliotars being given gusto – great excitement for our young players – along with their parents – so good to showcase our facilities and the eagerness of our young players indeed ‘the backbone’ of both our hurling and football clubs. As we all realize ‘sport’ is so important for all ages especially our young people.
Hurling:
Athea sent a hurling team to Knockaderry on Thursday last to play the local U12 team in a challenge match. We both had 16 players and we played two 8 a side games, which worked a treat. Our boys have a lot of ground to make up but they continue to improve, and these games bring them on greatly. Thanks to Knockaderry for hosting us. Maroon team: Timmy O’Keeffe, James Hunt, Sean Twomey, Tomas Ahern, Eric Barrett, Sean Mahar, Rory Curley, Jamie Lee Flynn.
White team: Rory Cleary, Jamie O’Mahony, Louis O’Sullivan, Tadhg Ahern, Peter Coolahan, Caelan Lonergan, Jamie Quinn, Alex Quinn and Tom Ahern.
U10:
The U10 hurlers played Tournafulla in Athea on Wednesday night last, we had a huge turnout of 19 players.
U16 Football:
The U16s are still waiting for confirmation of the date for their much anticipated Co Final v Kildimo/Pallaskenry, which is due to be played in Foynes.
U8 Football:
The U8 football blitz due to be played last Friday in Killeedy was cancelled due to the inclement weather.
U10 Football:
The U10 Footballers played in the annual Billy Kirwan Tournament in Foynes last Saturday, they had two tough games against St. Senans and Shannon Gaels.
U12 Football:
The U12s are due to play Caherconlish on this Thursday Sept ember 5th at a venue to be confirmed in a playoff to decide who we play in the U12 finals weekend on Friday or Saturday September 20th or 21st.
