Minors:

The Minors are out on this Friday evening, August 2nd at 7.30pm in Foynes against St. Senan’s. All support would be much appreciated.

Junior B:

The ‘Junior B’ team line out in Askeaton on next Sunday evening at 7pm against Adare. Please support.

Intermediates:

Athea lined out against Claughaun in Askeaton on Sunday evening last in the Intermediate Football Championship, Group 1 Round 3. Unfortunately it was a final scoreline something similar to Limerick’s loss – Athea (0-7) – Claughaun (0-8) the opposition winning with a late free. It was a tough game, all playing well considering Athea players had 2 weddings of two of their players on Thursday and Friday. Congrats to both Pa Ahern and John Geoghegan and their new wives Deirdre and Karen. Incidentally Denis Greaney had a terrific game on the night.

U16 Football:

Athea u 16 footballers had a great game with Listowel Emmetts on Monday night last in Listowel. Listowel were not at full strength but it was good for our boy’s confidence to come out on top on a scoreline 4-12 to 4-9. There were excellent displays from Eoin O’Shea, Michael Tierney, Daire O’Shea and James Broderick.

Team: Evan Curry, Gavin Ambrose, Dermot Pierse, Pierse O’Brien, Eoin O’Shea, Gearoid O’Sullivan, Michael Tierney, Daragh Reidy, James Broderick, T.J. Hunt, Daire O’Shea, Andrew O’Riordan, Cillian O’Connor and Fergal Pierse.

U14s:

Our u 14s are playing Mountcollins in Mountcollins on Friday night at 7p.m. Cars leaving the village at 6.15p.m.

Adrian Murphy

News of the sudden death of Adrian Murphy was greeted with great sadness around Athea on the weekend of July 13th. Adrian was a key member of Athea underage football teams in the 1990s. He played corner back in the County U14 final in 1991, the U16 County final in 1993 and in the County winning minor team in 1995. Adrian was also on the U21 panel that won 3 West and one County title between ’94 and ’96.

Adrian was a charismatic individual and brought great spirit, enthusiasm and motivation to every football match and training session he attended. When younger he always arrived togged out and ready for action on his trusty BMX bike. Adrian always wore a white cotton bandage on his left knee following what we believe was a minor cycling accident. Adrian had a great knowledge of football and was well able to speak his mind at training regarding tactics and would question the coaching and training strategies when necessary, for the betterment of the group.

Following a drawn County U21 semi-final against Oola in 1996, he highlighted the opposition’s ability to utilize their substitutes to great effect, whilst the Athea Management had a more conservative approach to substitutions… (Adrian wore No 18 on that day). Adrian will be sadly missed and always remembered by all his Athea GAA team mates of the 1990s. Athea GAA club would like to express its sympathies to Adrian’s Family and friends at this time.

Adrian is third player from the left,  back row, in this picture  from the 1993 County U16 football  final.
