Athea GAA

Championship:

The next championship game will be on Sunday next in Askeaton against Claughaun, (check time for kick-off). All support would be most welcome. The club wishes all the best to Pa Ahern of Garrygloss who marries Deirdre Fitzpatrick this Thursday and to John Geoghegan who weds Karen Greaney this Friday, all football enthusiasts and players.

Hurling:

Bishop Brendan Leahy has told parishes to bring forward their mass times this Saturday to enable everyone to see the Limerick hurling game. We live in hope for a great win.

Medals:

On Saturday the contents of the late Jerry Carey’s home were auctioned. Included were Jerry’s Athea 1968 County and West Senior football medals which he had won – this was the only time Athea had won the Co. Senior Championship. (Jerry had been a member of An Garda Siochána here in Athea), and passed away earlier this year– Athea GAA players and friends forming a guard of honour at his funeral. Unfortunately he had passed away before the GAA 50th Commemoration night in the Devon Inn. His medals were auctioned and bought by a local man. Athea GAA representatives were unfortunately outbid on the day.

U16 Football

Our U16s continued their unbeaten run in the county league with a big win against under-strength city side St Patrick’s. The game was played in Athea before a big home crowd on Monday night last. Team: Evan Curry, Gavin Ambrose, Dermot Pierse, Gearoid O’Sullivan, Eoin O’Shea, Pauric Enright, Michael Tierney, T.J.Hunt, Daragh Reidy, Daire O’ Shea, Andrew O’Riordan, Pierse O’Brien, Conor Mullane, Brandon Finucane, Fergal Pierse, Cillian O’Connor and James Broderick.

Hurling

Athea sent 4 teams to Rathenagh, to play Tournafulla/Killeedy in under 6,8,10 and 12 Hurling last week. We had big numbers and they all played their hearts out on a night when we learned a lot from our more experienced opponents. Hurling coaching continues every Sunday morning at 11.30 at the High Field.
