Athea GAA

Good Luck:

Best of luck to Limerick this Sunday when they take on Tipperary in the Munster Final at 2pm. We hope that the team overcome the Premier County and can progress on the journey to Croke Park. Both teams are seen as the bookies favourites to win the Liam McCarthy Cup this year. The euphoria which came from last years success was a very welcome tonic and we hope that this mighty team can bring great excitement to the County again this year.

U8 Hurlers play at Blitz in Templeglantine:

Our U8 hurlers marked our very first outing when they attended a blitz held in Templeglantine. Eleven young players donned our new jerseys and played three games in what proved to be a very enjoyable evening. Tommy Denihan, Sean O’Connor and Loretta Brouder took charge of the team and were very satisfied with the players performances in each of the games. Hopefully this will be the first of many more outings for our young hurlers.

Billy Collins presents cup to Athea GAA Hurling:

A great crowd was in attendance at the Clubhouse on Monday evening when Billy Collins, Knocknagorna presented his Cup to the Club. Billy who played a key role in founding the Limerick Hurling Club, Chicago has very generously sponsored Athea Hurling and is very supportive of all our efforts to date. Many family and friends attended the event including Christy Roche who is home on holidays from Chicago. Billy who at 91 years of age gave an account of some of the great work he undertook while in America. His neighbours and friends from Knocknagorna reminisced about the days when he would come home from England or America. Johnny Mullane reminded us of the esteem to which he was held and all the help he gave to people both at home and abroad.

The Billy Collins Cup will be presented to the winner of a Tournament to be held in Athea later this year involving hurling teams invited to participate.

Seamus Ahern, Chairman of Athea Hurling expressed the Clubs gratitude to Billy for his generous donation and overall support. Billy was surrounded by young Athea hurlers and said that his wish was that those young players would compete at a high level around the County.

We were reminded that Athea played hurling in the 80’s and that Paddy Enright, Templeathea worked tirelessly with the young team at the time.

There were refreshments served afterwards. A great evening was had by those in attendance.
