Minor:
Our Minor girls were crowned Minor Novice A County Champions on Tuesday evening last when they beat Pallasgreen in Kildimo. On a perfect evening for football we got off to a great start when our youngest member of the panel Ciara O’ Sullivan opened the scoring with a wonderful point. Our backs were in fine form with the Ryan sisters, Grace and Amy, Michelle Curtin along with Laura Dalton all tenacious in their tackling, while up front Siobhan Sheehy, Ciara O’Sullivan and Denise Carmody kept the Pallasgreen backs on their toes. We continued to dominate the first half thanks to the work rate of our midfielders Rachel Greaney and Claire Carmody along with the excellent Noelle Curtin who chipped in with an amazing tally of 1-07 in the first half to leave the score at the break, Athea 1-08, Pallasgreen 0-02. Pallasgreen rallied in the second half, scoring 1-02 to leave just four points between the teams with eight minutes left on the clock. Our girls had to dig deep and great work by Michelle Curtin set up Claire Carmody who scored a wonderful point from thirty yards. Pallasgreen responded when they rose the white flag, but up popped Claire Carmody again with another super point from distance. A pointed free from Noelle Curtin kept us six points ahead, but a gallant Pallasgreen side never gave up, they tried hard for a second goal, but a brilliant save from Sarah O’ Connor kept them out. Ciara O’Sullivan capped of a fine performance with her second point of the night from a free and in the dying moments Noelle Curtin scored her ninth point of the match to leave the final score Athea 1-13, Pallasgreen 1-05. Captain Rachel Greaney accepted the trophy on behalf of the team and they all enjoyed refreshments afterwards in the clubhouse. Well done to the team and Management of Tommy Denihan and Liz O’ Sullivan on a great success.
