Athea GAA
Junior B:
Our Junior ‘B’ team travelled to Ballysteen on Saturday evening last, where they played Ballysteen in the West Junior ‘B’ football league. It was a good game and the score at the whistle read Ballysteen (2 -1) – Athea (3 -7) a draw! The next game for the Jnr B’s will be at home to St. Senan’s either on Friday/Saturday this week – watch for the time etc.
Minors:
Our Minors gave Shannon Gaels (the Ballyhahill/Glin combination) a run for their money on Saturday evening last here at Páirc na nGael. Despite being just a challenge game it was a tough, hard-fought game and was a good test for both teams. Athea came out victorious in the end. A team indeed to watch!
Intermediates:
The next game for the Intermediates is on Tuesday, May 14th against Gerald Griffins, here in Athea with a 7pm start. This is a Div ‘3’ league game and all support will be appreciated

U16s
Granagh/Ballingarry 3:07 Athea 3:15
Our U16s travelled to Ballingarry on Monday evening in Round 2 of the U16 13aside competition. This was our first competitive match after having received a walkover in Round 1. The team clocked up a fine score of 3:15 with 2:07 coming from Andrew O’Riordan who played one of his finest games in an Athea jersey. He was a handful the entire game and kicked points with both feet to add to the two goals he scored early in the first half.
Michael Tierney and Eoin O’Shea put in fine performances with Michael scoring four points whereas Eoin mopped up a lot of loose ball and launched attack after attack.
Darragh Reidy is showing more and more composure on the ball and played in midfield giving a good account of himself throughout.
Dara O’Shea went off midway in the first half shortly after having scored a point with what looked like a knee injury. Brandon Finucane came on and did well with some well placed passes into the full forward line.
We dominated the first half but leaked 2:03 in a poor 10 minute spell which left the margin at only 4 points at halftime. The home side started well in the second half getting back to within two points of us. We found our rhythm again and pulled away to a six point margin when we gave away a penalty which reduced the margin to 3 points. We pulled clear again wih good scores form TJ Hunt, James Broderick and an Evan Curry goal to stretch the lead to 9 points in the finish. We could even afford to miss a penalty late in the game.
A very good performance overall by this team who moved the ball very well throughout the game. Under the management team of Padraig Walsh, Jason Dalton and Jamesie O’Connor they are showing encouraging signs. Their next match is next Monday evening against Pallasgreen in Athea

U12 Visit To Croke Park:
Our U12 team had a very enjoyable trip to Croke Park recently. A bus load of players, coaches, parents and supporters left the village early on a Friday morning and came home with a day full of fantastic memories. As the names of all the Athea team shone bright on the big screen over looking Croke Park, so did our players on the pitch as they played three matches against Mayfield, Kildangan and Castlegregory. They then got a tour of Croke Park and one of the many highlights was meeting Kerry star forward David Clifford. It was a most enjoyable day for everyone who travelled and one they will never forget. Many thanks to Eamon McElligott of Brown Joes, Diarmuid Collins of Stelcon, Francis Ahern and Paul Collins who all gave sponsorship towards the player’s togs, socks, half zips and gear bags. It is greatly appreciated by the club.
U16s:
Our U16 team had a great win on Monday evening last against Granagh/Ballingarry. We kicked some fantastic scores on the night. Well done to the team and management.
