Congratulations to Carrigkerry primary school one of seven from Limerick who were  regional finalists in the prestigious annual Our World Aid Awards. They presented  their projects alongside those from 15 other schools, at the Regional final event that took place in Mary Immaculate College Limerick on Wednesday May 15. The theme of the entries was “Leave No One Behind” and the standard was very high. Now in their 14th year the Awards invited children across Ireland to create projects about the challenges facing children in developing countries and the role played by Ireland, through Irish aid the Government programme for international development. The four members Seán Long, Daniel Mulvihill, Jack O’Shaughnessy and James O’Sullivan received an Our World Irish Aid Award plaque. Well done to their teacher Anne Horan, and all involved in their project.

The Desmond League soccer season is at a standstill at present due to the unavailability of referees. They have not taken charge of any junior football games since Friday, May 10, following the alleged assault on one of their members. Talks have taken place between the Desmond League, and the Referee’s Association, without an agreement on the issue. At present three League titles and four cup competitions remain to be completed as June approaches. If a solution is not found  their destination will be left undecided.

Saint Kieran’s defeated Dromcollogher/Broadford by 1-13 to 0-7 in Round 3 of the All County  Division 1 Football League at Dromcollogher on Thursday, May 16. Saint Kieran’s lost to Granagh/Ballingarry by 3-16 to 0-5 in the West Junior B Football League at Coolcappa on Friday, May 17. Jack O’Sullivan, Kilcolman NS, was a member of the Limerick team that played Cork in the Primary game at the Gaelic Grounds on Sunday, May 19. This year’s Limerick Fleadh Cheoil will be held in Athea over the June Bank Holiday weekend. An action-packed programme of events will be held to cater for all music lovers. For the dancers a  Céilí will be held on Saturday, June 1 in the Con Colbert Hall with music by Striolán and on Sunday June 2 with music by Taylor’s Cross.  They will commence at 9.30pm and sets will be called. Best wishes to Ardagh/Carrigkerry Comhaltas competitors who will be participating in the various competitions.

While the Fleadh Cheoil will be in full swing, Athea native Tom Moran will be  involved in an abseil down the Red Cow Hotel in Dublin. Three years ago, a stroke caused Tom to sustain a fall whilst on holiday in Spain causing a significant injury to his head. He underwent a craniotomy and spent 6 weeks in an induced coma in Carlos Haya Regional Hospital in Malaga before being air-lifted back to St James Hospital under the care of neurologist Dr Colin Doherty. He has made a remarkable recovery and is getting stronger daily and is excited about the abseil.

On this Sunday, June 2 to mark the 3rd anniversary of his near-fatal brain injury,  he will abseil down the 9-storey extension of the family Hotel. Tom’s goal is to help the hospital that helped him to make a positive recovery, and his aim is to raise €200k to build a dedicated Brain Disease Resource and Research Centre at St. James’s Hospital. He will be joined by his wife Sheila and children and we wish all a safe landing. Carrigkerry village was home to the Moran family during the 1980s when they were owners of the Country Club.

Mass will be celebrated in Shanagolden  graveyard on Sunday, June 2 at 11am, and all are welcome to attend.

The annual Mass in Calvary Cemetery Newcastle West will be celebrated on Tuesday, June 4 at 8pm. Relatives of people who are buried there are asked to attend to their graves beforehand, and all are welcome.

St Kieran’s Heritage Association is dedicated to protecting, preserving and promoting our local heritage. Secretary Mary Kury has compiled a worksheet titled Bird, Bug and Wildflower Detective Hunt Competition. It has been sent out to the local primary schools’ classes, although younger children might need an adult to help.  Children are asked to go outdoors at school and at home and get looking for all that biodiversity around us. All who complete the worksheet will  be in with the chance to win some biodiversity-themed prizes. Parents are asked to help the children with bird identification, folklore, songs and poems. Children are asked not pick wildflowers or disturb the habitats or insects or other wildlife. Leave things as you have found them and never litter. Hurling:

Well a great crowd turned out on Sunday morning last for the grand launch of the newly-formed ‘Athea Hurling Club’ at Páirc na nGael. It was brilliant to see so many young children along with their parents in attendance. Special guests Mike Cunningham – County Coaching Officer, David O’Dea – G.D.A.  and Noel Hartigan – Coaching Games Officer, were present and were all delighted with the prospects of the new hurling club. The Liam McCarthy Cup was being chased around everywhere with all the children vying for a photo with the cup. Billy Collins of Knocknagorna also attended and this was great to see – as Billy was instrumental in setting up the Limerick Hurling Club in Chicago many years ago, so Billy was delighted to see Athea taking the same steps. Also on the day further players registered to join the club. Refreshments were provided to all, which were most welcome for kids and parents alike – in all a great day – here’s to Hurling in Athea! and to success for Limerick next weekend.

Club Draw:

If you haven’t already got a ticket for the 500 Club Draw – you still have time to buy one from the committee or phone me Kathleen on 087-1233361.

Intermediates:

Athea Intermediates travelled to Mountcollins on Sunday evening last to take on the home side. It was an exciting game to say the least, with Athea taking the lead initially. However the opposition netted a goal before half time and they also put over a few more points in the second half which, into injury time, left Athea just 1 pt up and this was the final score thankfully 12pts to 1-08. Well done.
