Athea Utd Soccer

U16 Division 2 (Sat, March 9th)

Athea Utd (0) 1    (Paric Enright)

GB Rovers (1) 2

The sixteens were most unlucky not to have taken something from last Saturdays opening league game of the 2019 season, narrowly going down two one to GB Rovers at The Vales. GB opened the scoring in the first half with an own goal from a corner. We had a couple of chances before the interval, the best coming to Andrew O’Riordan with a header from a corner on the left. Half time 0-1.

The second half was very even with little to choose between the sides. With fifteen minutes left we were level when Andrew delivered a first time cross from the left that came to the back post where Paric Enright shot low to the net. We went very close to taking the lead when a shot from Paric rattled the butt of the right post. With the game looking like a draw GB got the winner in the last minute when a shot from just inside the box took a slight deflection off a defender and took it away from keeper Evin Curry who otherwise had a fine outing in his first game at U16s.

Their next game is away to Rathkeale next Monday morning.

Team: Evin Curry, Shane Scanlon, Aidan Swan, Conor Mullane, Dara Reidy, TJ Hunt, Gavin Ambrose, Andrew O’Riordan, Brandon Finucane, Eoin O’Shea, Jack Vaughan. Subs Killian O’Connor, Paric Enright, James Broderick.  Referee Pat O’Donnell

Athea GAA

S.D.C.:

Well following the very successful and well supported S.D.C. fundraising night at The Devon Inn recently – the debt to date on Páirc na nGael is down to €33,000 from over €41,000, all monies will be finalized in the next couple of weeks and the final figure will be known then. The club thanks everyone for their support and good wishes and  it’s great to see the debt coming down.

Hurling:

Another asset to Athea club is that hurling will be starting on 31st March for 6-12 year olds. This is going to be great for our young players – they will be out– getting fit and learning the skills of this magnificent game – who knows there may yet be a Limerick hurler in our midst – we live in hope.

Intermediates:

Athea had a very successful game on Saturday last against Pallasgreen in Pallasgreen coming out on top on a scoreline of (2-8) to (1-5) indeed well done – (the early morning training is paying off). Next Saturday they line out here in Athea at 3pm against Ballylanders. Please give your support.

Well despite the stormy, wet weather we experienced over the past week teams including minors, intermediates etc were out on the pitch training in the cold and wet – well done.

Athea Ladies Football

Gaelic4Girls:

Gaelic4Girls has hit Athea by storm, with 53 girls from Athea and the surrounding areas treated to 60mins of great fun and coaching in Ladies Gaelic Football every Thursday. This programme continues for another 7 weeks every Thursday from 6-7 in Athea Community centres, it will hopefully move outdoors in the coming weeks with an improvement in the weather. It is fantastic to see so many enthusiastic girls so far, enjoying themselves.

The programme is open to girls aged 6-12yrs who are not part of a Ladies Gaelic Football Club and who are interested in learning the skills of the game. The girls will be taught the basic skills of Gaelic football on a fun basis and will get to demonstrate their new skills at a fun mini-blitz. All girls will be presented with a Gaelic4Girls Jersey and certificate at the end of the 8 weeks. A major bonus from the programme is that all participants will get the chance to participate in a Mini Blitz with The Banner from Ennis and Ballymacelligott Co Kerry. The cost for the entire programme is only €10.
