Athea GAA
Fund-Raiser:
Friday, March 1st 2019 is the date now set for the forthcoming fund-raiser for Athea GAA. The event will take place at The Devon Inn. This year it’s going to be entitled S.D.C. – Singers – Dancers – & Chancers, a change from the Lip-Sync title! No doubt those who were involved previously will be in training in the very near future.
This year Julie Finucane is the chief organizer and as well as getting the previous participants organized for the show – it is hoped that the Men’s and Ladies football teams will have a part in the show and of course the “Mothers and Others” who are new to the scene – will, we hope, put on a display! The night will be looked forward to with eagerness and is needed to try and offset the debt on the lovely pitch and of course the recently erected track lights, which are a huge asset to those training and walking, especially on these dark nights, with unsafe roads.
Fitness:
Well with not much going on in the “playing field” – fitness levels must be kept up for the future – and with our gym at Páirc na nGael and the running track there’s no excuse.

Minor County Semi Final: Casey/Colbert’s 4-04 Knockainey 1-04
Our minor girls joined with Fr. Caseys known as Casey/Colberts had a great win our Knockainey in the Minor A County semi-final in Abbeyfeale on Sunday morning last. It was a cold, wet and windy day for football and Knockainey with the advantage of the wind opened the scoring with a point after five minutes. The opposition continued to pile on the pressure, but our backs were excellent in keeping them at bay. When we settled into the game Sarah O’ Brien opened our account with a well taken point. Shortly afterwards, we had our second point when Noelle Curtin rose the white flag. Both sides were giving it their all at this stage, but an excellent move involving Michelle Curtin and Sarah O’ Brien ended with Muirne Lane scoring a great goal for Casey/Colberts midway through the half. We scored a second goal five minutes later when Chloe Brosnahan blasted to the net from close range. Knockainey fought their way back when they scored a goal and a point just before half time to leave the score at the break Casey/Colberts 2-02, Knockainey 1-02. It was all to play for in the second half and we got the perfect start when Sarah O’ Brien scored our third goal after great work from Muirne Lane and Ella Fitzgerald. Knockainey piled on the pressure but could not find a way past our defense. Noelle Curtin and Rachel Horan increased our lead with a point each before Knockainey responded with a point of their own. With ten minutes left on the clock the game was put beyond doubt when Sarah O’ Brien scored our fourth goal to put ten points between the teams. A late point for the visitors left the final score Casey/Colberts 4-04, Knockainey 1-04. We will play St. Ailbies in the final in the coming weeks. Panel: Sarah O’ Connor, Maeve Murphy, Rachel Greaney, Caoimhe Riordan, Michelle Curtin, Hazel Fitzgerald, Kara Scannell, Chloe Brosnahan, Sinead Leahy, Rachel Horan, Noelle Curtin, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah O’ Brien, Muirne Lane, Eilish Cotter, Claire Carmody, Shauna Curtin, Ciana Murphy, Grace Ryan, Ciara Hunt and Amy Ryan.
