Athea Ladies Football

Athea Girls National School Football Team:

Our girls National School football team took part in a seven a side blitz in Mick Neville Park on Monday last. They played excellently on the day, winning two of their matches, drawing one and losing one against Shanagolden, Ardagh, Kilcornan and Feenagh/Kilmeedy National Schools. For some it was their first time playing a match, but you would think they were playing for years. Their hand passing, kicking, soloing and defending was wonderful, but best of all they put in a big effort playing as a team and really enjoyed the day. Many thanks to the parents who travelled and helped out on the day. Panel: Sarah Morrissey, Katie Byrne, Rebecca Collins, Emma Vaughan, Isabella Barrett, Ailísa Ahern, Brid Hunt, Edel O Sullivan, Niamh Ambrose, Emma Scanlon & Anna Ahern.

Commemoration Night:

Well, the Commemoration Night in celebration of the great 55th and 50th wins of the 1963 Junior County team and 1968 Senior County team was indeed a night to remember! The Devon Inn in Templeglantine was the venue and from early evening the players and their families and GAA enthusiasts and dignitaries descended there. Photos were taken, all the team members donned out in their specially selected crested ties. People who hadn’t met in years were emotional to say the least, friendships were rekindled and past times fondly remembered. John Hunt, who was M.C. for the night, introduced the team members and they were presented with medals and booklets, put together for the occasion by Jamie Kelly of Clash, Athea, well done Jamie. Members of the County Board spoke during the night, all complimenting the players and Athea GAA Club, for putting the occasion together. Paul Curry (chairman) thanked everyone who attended and all who support the club and their fund-raising efforts each year. Brendan Grace made a surprise appearance and everyone enjoyed his jokes.

Thanks is extended to all who gave spot-prizes for the night –  the major prize of a Voucher for the Red Cow Inn, Dublin, presented by Tommy Moran, was won by Anne-Marie Horgan N.T., Athea. Congrats to all the other lucky winners. Dancing to Neily O’Connor had the floor full all night and of course his rendition of ‘Limerick you’re my Lady’ had everyone in full voice! Seamus Flanagan brought the Liam McCarthy Cup which was very exciting and some of the girls from the Limerick Junior team who won the recent All Ireland final were also present, which made the night all the more memorable. In all it was a night that no doubt will be spoken about for a long time to come. Here’s to Athea success for the future and a replica of the gallant 1963 and 1968 teams. DVD’s are now on sale at Collins’ Shop with interviews of team members and much more, a lovely memento of 2 hrs long.

U-21s:

Congrats and well done to the Athea/Mountcollins combination – Feale Rangers who, on Sunday, played Drom/Broadford in Abbeyfeale and won on a scoreline of 2-8 to 0-12.

Lighting:

This week another major improvement to the pitch with the erection of the flood-lights. Indeed a great boost for training and those using the walking/running track.
