Athea GAA

Intermediates:

Well “it wasn’t their day” on Friday when our Intermediate team unfortunately lost their “must win” game – to Kilbready (Martinstown). Well I suppose “you win some – you lose some” – better luck next time around.

Minors:

Well the Co. Final against Glin wasn’t a success for our minors on Saturday evening in Ballingarry. The scoreline at the whistle being 1-7 to 2-13 – however they must realize that many of our minor team will still be able to play minor for 2 or more years yet, as they were a very young bunch – so it was good to get this far anyway.

Best Wishes:

Get well wishes are extended to Johnny Mullane from the club and hopefully he will be out of hospital very soon again.

Club Draw:

The 4th leg of the ‘500 Club Draw’ will be at Collins’ on Saturday night. Best of luck to all ticket buyers.

Pitch: Ducting is being put in place at the pitch and the floodlights hopefully will be going up in the very near future.

Social:

Please pick up your tickets as soon as you can for the Celebratory Social for the 1963 & 1968 teams at The Devon Inn. Family tables can be pre-booked from Paul Curry, Pat Sullivan or me Kathleen Mullane on 087-1233361.

Match:

U16:

Athea 2-7 Rathkeale/Cappagh 1-12
This playoff game was definitely a game of two halves, we led at half time 2-5 to 0-3, but Rathkeale/Cappagh took over in the second half to out score us 1-9 to 0-2. The wind although not very strong did have an effect on the game. We sowed the seeds of our own downfall in the first fifteen minutes by kicking six wides while we were well on top. The boys as usual worked very hard throughout, but made things difficult for themselves, by some miss placed passes, giving easy possession back to the opposition. Colin Broderick had a great game in goals, as did Eoin O Shea at centre back and Conor McAuliffe both at full forward and when moved to midfield late on. Team: Colin Broderick, Eoin Sheahan, Thomas McEnery, Pierce O’ Brien, Luke Gleeson, Eoin O’ Shea, Gavin Ambrose, Michael Tierney, Andrew O’ Riordan, Aidan Curry, Evan Wallace, Jack Hunt, Bryan Reidy, Conor McAuliffe, Paraic Enright. Subs: TJ Hunt, Daire O’ Shea, Dermot Pierse and Conor Mullane. After this defeat we are still into the county shield semi-final, but no details of our opponents yet, training will continue on Friday from 6.30pm to 7.30pm.
