Match:

U16 County Semi-final:

Athea 2-5      Galtee Gaels 1-11
There was huge disappointment last Sunday in Athea when our u 16s bowed out at the semifinal stage against Galtee Gaels (Kilbeheny/Anglesboro) who had made the long journey from the farthest away part of South Limerick. The opposition were a bit more composed in possession and passed the ball a bit better than us especially in the last quarter. We had led all the way to the 45th minute by which stage we were 2-5 to 0-8 in front, but Galtee Gaels outscored us 1-03 to no score from there to the finish. That said we did miss three gilt edged goal scoring chances in that period. Even though they lost this is still a good team and if they all
stay together they will have plenty of success in the years ahead. Team: Colin Broderick, Pierce O’ Brien, Thomas McEnery, Eoin Sheahan, Brandon Finucane, Eoin O’ Shea, Gavin Ambrose, Michael Tierney, Andrew O’ Riordan, Aidan Curry, Evan Wallace, Luke Gleeson, Daire O’ Shea, Conor McAuliffe, T.J. Hunt, Subs, Paraic Enright, Bryan Reidy, Jack Hunt, Gearoid O’ Sullivan, Conor Mullane and Dermot Pierse

Athea Ladies Football

County Final:

Athea 2-06     Knockainey 2-08

There was heartbreak for our Intermediate team in the County final on Saturday last when a goal deep into injury time meant a two point defeat for our ladies. This was a very exciting match from start to finish and our ladies gave it their all and left everything they had on the field. Knockainey were first on the scoreboard with a point, but shortly afterwards we scored a great goal from the boot of Anita Quinn to take the lead after great work by Carla Sheehy. Michelle Curtin was playing very well at wing back, but had to go off injured after ten minutes. The opposition replied with a point of their own, but our forwards were getting on top, Maeve Carmody, Jackie Stackpoole, Lisa O’Connor and Carla Sheehy were causing all sorts of problems for the opposition. We scored three great points on the trot, Lisa O’Connell, Mary Ita Casey and Anita Quinn all raising the white flag. A great save by Sarah O’Connor in goal denied the opposition and the excellent Amy Carmody was there to grab the breaking ball to clear the lines. Katie Collins and Saorcha Fitzgerald were tenacious in defense, turning over the ball on many occasions. Just before half time Knockainey were awarded a penalty which they converted to leave the half time score Athea 1-03, Knockainey 1-02. It was all to play for in the second half, but it was Knockainey who scored the first three points of the half to take the lead. Sandra Larkin and Lisa O’Connell started winning the midfield battle and this was the foundation for the next three scores which were points all from the very lively Noelle Curtin to leave us a point ahead midway through the half. The opposition came back again and scored three more points to lead by two with time almost up. Our ladies didn’t drop their heads, they continued to work very hard, Pasty Cleary and Rebekah Daly led from the half back line, Megan Carroll, Claire Carmody, Maeve Murphy and Ciara Hunt, who came on as subs, all had an impact on the game. A great move by our ladies ended with Noelle Curtin scoring a great goal to give us the lead by a single point with time up. Unfortunately eight minutes later into injury time Knockainey managed to score a goal to break Athea hearts and win the final on a score line of Athea 2-06, Knockainey 2-08. It was a superb team effort on the day with everyone playing their part. Team: Sarah O’Connor, Saorcha Fitzgerald, Katie Collins, Amy Carmody, Rebekah Daly, Pasty O’Leary, Michelle Curtin, Lisa O’Connell, Sandra Larkin, Carla Sheehy, Anita Quinn, Mary Ita Casey, Maeve Carmody, Jackie Stackpoole, Noelle Curtin. Subs: Megan Carroll, Lisa O’Connor, Claire Carmody, Ciara Hunt, Maeve Murphy and Rachel Greaney.

ATHEA DRAMA GROUP

Our AGM took place at the Library on Tuesday September 11th in front of a large crowd. Our secretary, Ellen Quille read out the minutes of our 2017 AGM followed by a run down of our accounts by Amina Parkes.

Chairman Lal Browne thanked everyone for their commitment towards our 2018 production of ‘Pretend Sick’ comparing the preparation required to stage a play similar to the preparation for an All Ireland Hurling Final. All our local businesses were acknowledged for supporting our raffle which allowed us to donate €2,700 this year to local charities. Lal also paid tribute to Mike Parkes RIP and wished everyone good health in the years to come.

A discussion took place on a production for Spring 2019. It was decided that the group would move away from a comedy/farce for the coming year and stage a play with more complex themes. This will both challenge us and allow us to learn and grow together as a group. Readings will take place at the Carnegie Library on Tuesday September 25th at 8.30pm where new members would be especially welcome.

Anyone wishing to be a member for the 2018/2019 period are asked to pay Amina Parkes/ Ellen Quille €1 membership as dictated by our insurance policy.

The following officers were elected for 2018/2019; Chairperson – Lal Browne, Vice Chairperson – Tommy Denihan, Secretary – Ellen Quille, Assistant Secretary – Annette O’ Donnell, Treasurer – Amina Parkes, Assistant Treasurer – Tom O’Keeffe, PRO – Damien Ahern,

Assistant PRO – Oliver McGrath. Honorary Presidents – Teresa Mullane, Oliver McGrath.

Athea Parish Journal

It’s that time of year again when we are asking people to send in their pieces for the journal. We are starting to put the journal together at the moment as we would like to get it on the shelves at least a couple of weeks earlier than other years.

It takes a lot of time to pull it all together and we are asking people to send in their material as soon as possible. Photos can be dropped into the office for scanning and will be kept safe. This will be the 30th issue and might very well be the last one to hit the shelves, so let’s make it a good one!
