Congrats and well done to all those who received their Junior Cert results on Wednesday last. All the surrounding schools did very well. Here’s to the future for all of them.

Trish Phillips-Aherne wishes to thank sincerely everyone who gave so very generously to the Vixens Basketball Club collection recently. It was very much appreciated and will be a good help to the club and all the young players.

A reminder that the annual Coffee Morning in aid of Milford Hospice takes place on this Thursday, September 20th at the Hall kitchen. As always your continued support would be very much appreciated. All donations, however small, are welcome and of course the array of cakes and buns is more than enticing. The baking volunteers do a great job.

The death took place last week of Jim O’Sullivan, of Park, Upper Athea, who had been unwell for some time. Many came to pay their last respects at the family home on Thursday evening last. Burial followed requiem mass on Friday to Holy Cross Cemetery. Sincere sympathy is extended to his wife Vera, son Gerard and daughter Mary and many relatives and friends. ‘May the light of heaven be his’.

Yoga with Linda Mumbray continues in the hall each Monday night from 7-8.30pm. A great way of de-stressing and making new friends. Everyone is welcome especially newcomers.

I just note from Tom Aherne’s notes in the newsletter that Carrigkerry are in the process of getting their playground up and running, having been allocated funding. Hopefully at some stage Athea will also have a nice playground for the children as do many of our surrounding towns and villages eg. Moyvane and now Carrigkerry.

Well the Listowel Races are over for yet another year and with the exception of Monday the 2nd day of racing the weather held up fairly well, especially for the Ladies Day on Thursday and the Vintage day on Saturday. Of course Friday, as always, attracted a large number of students who usually get half days off from school. Many said it was “distressing” to say the least, all through Friday to see so many of our young people, some being lifted, – girls without shoes, hardly knowing their own names or who they came with – What’s Gone Wrong??
