Athea GAA

Gerry Carey RIP

The club was saddened by the passing of Gerry Carey last week after an illness. Gerry, who was from Galway, was a well respected man in Athea having served as a Guard here in the 60s. He was also a prominent member of the successful football teams of 63 and 68 and won a Senior Championship medal in 1968. He also served as Treasurer of Athea Credit Union in the early days.

In recent years he was bereaved when his wife Breda (nee Shine) died. He was visited regularly by a number of friends from Athea as his illness made him weaker and weaker.

His former GAA colleagues, Retired Guards and Athea Credit Union formed a Guard of Honour for his removal to the church on Saturday.

The club offers its sympathies to the Carey family and Shine family for the sad passing of Gerry.

Pitch matters

After weeks of sunshine pitches are suffering as the temperatures are too high and the moisture levels in the soils plummet. We have seen photos of some pitches and golf courses which are scorched and this just reminds us of how we take for granted the regular rainfall which Ireland gets.

After carrying out a sanding and vertidraining programme in June the pitch could have done with plenty of rain and consequently there are some areas where grass growth is weak

The next project on the cards is the installation of walkway lighting before the winter sets in. This will provide the community with the opportunity to walk or run safely during the dark evenings and this year’s club draw will help fund the project.

Minor Match

The Minor team tasted victory last Friday evening when they took on a fancied St. Senans team in Pairc na nGael. In a very entertaining game the local team were never out of touch against the opposition and were within a few points at half-time. As has happened before many of the players on the team raised their game in the second half and but for some poor shooting the margin would have been wider than the one point between the teams at the finish.

The game finished 4:08 to 4:07 with some excellent performances throughout the team. Goals by John Sexton and Jack O’Connor kept us in touch. Gritty performances throughout kept us resilient to the end. We had a number of U16s in the team who gave a very good account of themselves and who have a lot to offer the club in the future.

Team: TJ Murphy, D. O’Connor, S. Ambrose, D. O’Sullivan, C. Broderick, M. Dalton, TJ White, J. Sexton, M. Tierney, E. Wallace, A. Curry, J. O’Connor, E. Sheahan, C. McAuliffe, B. Reidy. Subs: B. Finucane, G. Ambrose, T. McEnery, E. O’Shea.

Junior B Championship

Our Junior B’s faced a tough opening championship assignment on Sunday evening when they faced a strong Knockaderry side in Feenagh.

We had many chances in the first half which we failed to convert which left us with an uphill battle to climb. After losing a man to a red card early in the second half and also conceding a penalty the game ran away from us. The match finished on a scoreline of 4:13 to 1:06

Team: K. Hartnett, T. Brosnan, P. Daly, P. O’Sullivan, M.Tierney, C. Fitzgerald, P. O’Mahony, N. Hunt, M. Dalton, W. Sexton, P. Ahern, S. Ryan, , C. Hassett, S. Ahern, B. Sheehan. Subs: T. McAuliffe, T. White, E. Horgan

Athea Ladies Football

Match:

Monday July 9:

Athea 2-08 Oola 3-05

Athea Ladies made the long trip to Oola on Monday evening last to take on the locals in the football league. This was a very close and exciting game and after ten minutes of the match the sides were level at three points apiece, with the Athea’s scores coming for Carla Sheehy, Claire Carmody and Sandra Larkin.  We played some outstanding football and playing with the hill we scored three unanswered points with Mary Ita Casey, Carla Sheehy and Lisa O Connell getting on the score board to leave us ahead at the break 0-06, 0-03.  Early in the second half Oola scored 1-02 without reply to take a two point lead. Athea rallied back and we were awarded a penalty which was converted by Rebekah Daly. Both sides exchanged scores and we were three points up with minutes remaining, when Oola were awarded a penalty which they scored to leave the final score Athea 2-08, Oola 3-05. We would like to thank Oola for the refreshment afterwards. We will play Dromcollogher/Broadford at home next Monday evening July 16; all support would be greatly appreciated.
