The death has taken place of Cornelius (Connie) McCoy, 21 Castleview, Newcastle West and late of Ballyloughane, Carrigkerry. He passed away peacefully in the exceptional care of the Bluebell Ward St Ita’s Hospital, Newcastle West on July 12. He was predeceased by his parents Con and Hannie, brother Michael and recently deceased sister Kathleen.  He lay in repose at Reidy’s Funeral Home, Newcastle West on Saturday July 14 from 6pm followed by removal to the Church of the Immaculate Conception Newcastle West. The Requiem Mass was celebrated on Sunday July 15 at 12 noon.  Connie was laid to rest in Calvary Cemetery Newcastle West. We extend our sympathy to his brothers Seanie, Jimmy and Timmy and sister Josie, brothers in law, sisters in law, nephews, nieces, relatives and friends. May he rest in peace.

Congratulations and best wishes in the future to Aoife Scanlan and Noel O’Connell, who were married in St Colman’s Church Kilcolman on Saturday July 14.

Saint Kieran’s defeated Granagh/Ballingarry by 2-15 to 4-5 in Group B of the West Junior B Football Championship at Quaid Park Coolyroe on Wednesday July 11.

Saint Kieran’s lost away to Saint Patrick’s by 2-8 to 0-13 in Round 6 of Division 1 of the All County Senior Football League on Tuesday July 10

Askeaton/St Kieran’s lost to Newcastle West by 6-12 to 1-16 in the West Minor Hurling Championship at Askeaton on Tuesday July 10.  They also lost to Daithí Brudair by 1-11 to 1-9 at Askeaton on Thursday July 12.

Congratulations to Daniel Geraghty, St Kieran’s who represented Limerick in the Munster U-16 Football Tournament.  Limerick defeated Clare in the Munster Plate Final at Mick Neville Park.

Well done to Bobby Woulfe, Ardagh and Newcastle West Cycling Club (and other locals) who completed the recent Ring of Kerry Cycle. Cycling has become a very popular sport in recent years, with new clubs being set up in towns and villages around Limerick. It is a great form of exercise, out in the fresh air in the company of other like people.

Tours of Glin Castle and Garden will be held on Sunday July 29 on the hour from 12 noon to 6pm. The admission is €10 with refreshments included and served within the castle.

Congratulations to Mike Neville Castlemahon, who won €227 in the West Limerick 102fm 50/50 draw, held on Friday July 20. Tickets cost €2 and they are available from volunteers, in local shops, or from the radio station. All support is very much appreciated.

The Desmond Credit Union Newcastle West has launched their 6th annual Third Level Bursary Award for students. The student must be a member of the Desmond Credit Union to apply, and one lucky student will be given € 6,000 towards their college education. The association are holding three events during August which should be of interest to members of the public. First up is the Unveiling of the Bishop Lacy Stone at Ardagh Graveyard Mass at the Millennium Altar and Pattern at St Molua’s Well on Friday August 3 from 6.30pm. This will be followed by a talk by Dr Salvador Michael Ryan of Maynooth in the Community Centre. On Sunday August 5 a 12k walk from Bishop Lacy’s birthplace Dromada, Athea to Ardagh Community Centre will be held. A bus will ferry the people from Ardagh at 12 noon to the start, and the route will take in the Booster Station Rooska, Ballyine, Old Mill Dunganville, and Ardagh. On Thursday August 23 a talk by Dr Bill O’Brien U.C.C. will be held in the Community Centre at 7.30pm. The title is Ballylin Hill Fort the Bronze Age Capital of Limerick and it will be followed by tea and cake. This event is in association with Heritage week. The next meeting will be held on Wednesday August 1 at 8pm in Ardagh Heritage Centre.

A Faith Camp will be held at the Boys National School Abbeyfeale from August 7-10 inclusive. The activities will include Sports, Arts, Drama, Music and Faith Lessons. A Charity Céilí in aid of the Irish Cancer Society will be held in the Resource Centre Knockaderry on Friday August 10 from 9.30pm. Joe Ahern, Glenagore, Athea is repeating his walk from Ardagh to Listowel for Crumlin Children’s Hospital on Saturday August 11. It will commence at 9am from Ardagh Church, and from 12 noon there will be a 3 mile loop of Athea, followed by refreshments, before continuing on to Listowel. Joe can be contacted on 086-8155614.

The annual graveyard mass in Coolcappa will be celebrated on Sunday August 12 at 10am.

The staff and parents of Kilcolman N.S. are organising their first Golf Classic fundraiser on Friday August 31 (1pm to 4.30pm) and Saturday September 1 (2pm to 4pm). The general public can involved by providing donations and prizes, helping to provide sponsorship for the tee boxes, and sponsoring a team of three.
