Match: Monday April 2:

County Intermediate Football Championship:

Athea 0-09         Pallasgreen 0-08

Our Intermediates got off to a wining start in this year’s Championship after a hard fought one point win over Pallasgreen. There was much anticipation around the parish as our new manager Seamus O’ Donnell led Athea into the Championship for the first time. There was never more than a kick of a ball between the teams and it was Darren Murphy who opened the scoring a well taken point for Athea. Shortly afterwards, Gerard Ahern got his name on the score sheet when he scored a point from play. Pallasgreen fought their way back into the match and scored three points on the trot to take a one point advantage mid way through the half. The Pallasgreen defense proved hard to break down, but two pointed frees from the boot of Gerard Ahern put us back into the lead again. Just before half time, two late points from Pallasgreen left the half time score, Athea 0-04, Pallasgreen 0-05. Early in the second half Pallasgreen increased their lead with a well taken point, but our defense led by Michael Reidy tightened up and shut out the oppositions attack. A pointed free from Gerard Ahern and a long range point from the boot of Shane Mulvihill had the teams all square mid way through the half. A brilliant double save from Mark O’ Connor in goals kept Pallasgreen at bay and we took the lead when Gerard Ahern pointed his fifth point of the match. Pallasgreen fought by back and scored two points to take the lead with only minutes remaining on the clock. Athea dug deep and leveled the match with another pointed free from Gerard Ahern and then deep in injury time Dylan Griffin set up Pa Chawke who scored a super point from thirty yards to secure a victory to the delight of all the Athea support at the match. This was a hard fought win with powerful displays from Gerard Ahern, Denis Greaney and Jamie Collins to name but a few. We now look forward to our next championship match this Saturday against Claughan. The Club would like to wish Jonathan Fitzgerald a very speedy recovery after he sustained an injury during the match. Panel: Mark O’ Connor, Shane Tierney, Martin Chawke, Padraig Reidy, Tommy Quaid, Michael Reidy, Jamie Collins, Jonathan Fitzgerald, Gerard Collins, Denis Greaney, Gerard Ahern(0-6), Darren Murphy(0-1), Kevin Murphy, Conor Mullane, Mark Reidy, Subs: James Ryan (Jonathan Fitzgerald), Dylan Griffin (Tommy Quaid), Shane Mulvihill(0-1)(Mark Reidy), Pa Chawke(0-1) (Gerard Collins), Alan Kelly (Shane Tierney), Jason Kelly (Kevin Murphy), Neilo Keane, Jason Dalton, Dan McMahon, Sean Ryan, Pat Ahern, Padraic Walsh and Kieran Harnett.

Intermediates:

Best of luck to the team who, on Friday evening next, April 6th, will meet Chaughaun in Askeaton with a 6.30 start. Your support would be much appreciated as the boys start out on the road hopefully to ‘success’ for the season.

Minors:

Training for our minors starts this Wednesday, under the expert leadership of Mark Reidy and Richard Fitzgerald. These boys are ‘bubbling’ with enthusiasm and full of energy, so hopefully they will get good results throughout.

Club Gear:

Well done to Colm Hassett, Raymond Brouder, Meghan Carroll and Dylan Griffin who modeled the Athea GAA Club gear so well at the Tidy Towns Fashion Show on Wednesday night last. They were very impressive indeed. The gear can be ordered on the O’Neills website under Athea GAA, where there are many more tops etc to choose from.

50 Year Celebration:

Well, matters are being put in place for the 50yr celebration for the gallant 1968 Co. Team winners. It should be a great night at The Devon Inn in October, with thankfully most of the team members alive to tell the story!
