SEAN FITZGERALD R.I.P.
All connected with the club were saddened to hear on the passing of Sean Fitzgerald of Batt’s Bar last week, one of the great characters in Athea. Sean was a great supporter of the club for many years, from hosting out lotto draws to sponsoring our teams at various stages over the years. Sean was a passionate Arsenal supporter and it was a brave person who would dare criticise the gunners. To his family and friends we extend to them our deepest sympathy. Rest In Peace Sean.

Athea GAA
Sympathy:
Well, one of the great supporters of Athea GAA – (both men’s and ladies clubs) was laid to rest here in Holy Cross cemetery, Athea on Saturday last. Sean Fitzgerald (or Sean Batt as he was known to everyone) ran one of the oldest pubs here in Athea and his death came as a shock to the Athea community and beyond. He was an avid supporter of Arsenal and Athea Utd Soccer. The 1997 Athea GAA Jersey that he sponsored was laid on his coffin and team and club members formed a guard of honour on Friday night as he was brought to the church. He will be sadly missed by all the sporting clubs including the ‘Bikers’ who led his funeral hearse on Saturday to his final resting place. Sympathy from Athea GAA to his sisters, brother, relations and so many friends. R.I.P.
Games:
On Saturday, before the Limerick Ladies v Antrim game and the Athea men’s game v Ballydonoghue, a minute’s silence was held in remembrance of Sean Batt Fitzgerald. Despite the inclement weather a nice crowd attended and Athea pitch was the only one in Limerick suitable for the games, a fact we should be proud of!
On this Friday, 9th Athea play a challenge game in Mountcollins – so your support would be appreciated.
Coiste na nÓg:
Garda Vetting:
As we prepare ourselves for the New Year of training and matches we need to remind ALL our coaches who will be involved with children up to the age of 18 years old that they MUST be Garda Vetted.
It is a very easy process to go through. If any of our coaches are not Garda vetted they will not be allowed to coach any team until they have processed their details.
GAA vetting services are available to any person over 16 years of age fulfilling a role of responsibility with children. Consent from a parent / Guardian shall be required for applicants between 16 & 18 years of age.
If you have received an email to confirm your clearance, please forward a copy of this email to Jacqueline as soon as possible so records are up to date.
